Tires, Wheels..

I have a 77 Ford F-150 4x4. I want to run larger wheels on it, 16". Will I run into any problems with steering or anything?

Also, I want to put a 4-6" lift on my truck, and put 35" tires under it, again; will I run into any problems with steering and such?

I would assume you are running 1/2 ton right.

I personally would not go with 16" there to much rim for the road unless yer haulin stuff with em, i would recommend stickin with the 15" rims and go with a 3" body lift if yer gonna run 35's....it just looks goofy if you don't have lift with bigger tires....look at my gallery and you can see what mine looks like with 15" rims and 35" tires. i think you'll agree.

Ditto on sticking with 15's. Not only do they look better on the older trucks, you have a much better tire selection.

And 33's are the limit for a stocker and looking decent - Here's mine: 35's would be a 3-4" lift to look "right" I think - but it's all a matter of personal taste.

Thanks! It's a "20 footer" at the moment - awful prep work under good paint, and the $10 stocker rims need to bite the dust, but it's coming along!

In response to the previous 2 replies (nice rigs, both of you, by the way) the tire size and lift do really come down to a personal preference thing - and there are nearly as many tire sizes to pick from in 16" as 15" nowadays. As far as 35" tires go, you will need the 4 inches of lift, not just for appearance but for good clearance as well. The only problem I had to address doing this was the stock steering system. If yours is still stock, you will need to convert it from the old "inverted Y" to the 78/79 style "inverted T". All of the reputable lift kit companies will reference this in their Notes section. The reason for this is the geometry change induced on the old steering arrangement by lifting it, and the associated difficulties in establishing correct alignment again. This is a bummer, in a way, because it makes an otherwise relatively inexpensive lift kit cost more in the end. However, the newer style steering comes with the benefit of much less "bump steer" than the old style. I personally went with 16" wheels, but primarily because I had a set of partially used 285/75-16 T/A's stting around that had come off of my Super Duty, so I could postpone the outlay of cash for a complete set of wheels and tires. Hope this helps a little, and good luck with whichever direction you decide to take!

Check my gallery, my 77 has just the Pro-Comp leveling coils, and I have 255/85/16 which are basically a 33" tire, they are on 16x8 DC-1 rims, and I have to say I think the tire choices are about the same, maybe a bit more variance in the 16" size. Depending on what you want out of your truck, determines what lift. I wanted larger tires and some better off-road-ability, but I did want to stay close to stock. I think it looks superb, and it drives like a dream. I replaced ALL the bushings, and went with 2 degree C-bushings to correct the alignment.
