93 Ranger XLT
If oil leaks are now it's only problem, seems to me right now it would be wise to try the high mileage oil & see if it'll check up the leaks.
The 3.0L, if geared the same as the 4.0L, will use about as much gas, so there isn't much advantage there. The 4.0L should be more powerful, thus more fun to drive.
How much oil do you figure is leaking out between changes & where are all the places it's leaking from????
Does the 4.0L engine sound ok, no rod. or main bearing knocks???? I know you said, once started, it runs ok, but whats "ok"????
Does ok, mean pretty darn good????
Does it smoke any out the exhaust pipe????
If so, what color is the smoke?????
There is a small oil spot under the truck after it has been sitting. Maybe about 2" across, and yes it does have some white smoke out the exhaust pipe when you first start it. Haven't noticed it while i'm driving.
If it's not using any coolant, that would be good.
Blue smoke would indicate it's burning some oil. If the exhaust pipe is oily feeling & black in color, these would be other hints of it using oil.
A dry, brown color exhaust pipe, would indicate the engine is probally still tight.
No smoke while driving, is a good sign.
Sounds like the hot no start problem & oil leaks, are the major concern & if they can be checked up without major outlays of your gold, you could buy some time to decide if an engine swap is worth it.
If you do the engine change, I'd swap the new parts you just installed, off the old engine, to the replacement engine.
Yeah I will definently take all the new parts off this motor if we do the motor swap.
Thanks for all your help and ideas. I'll repost anything else I find and what we end up doing.
