Okay, thanks for the imput guys. Does 5,000 lbs sound correct??? That's what it says next to my GVWR. I've heard other men on this forum say their truck is around 3,500 or 4,000 lbs. Maybe flareside boxes are heavier...??

Thanks guys

From the Standard Catalog of Ford Light Duty Trucks

1994 F150 Flareside Pickup ~ Six Cylinder ~ Shipping Weight = 3,975 lbs.

GVWR is NOT the weight of the truck. It means that the Gross Vehicle Weight should not exceed 5000 lbs.

The R stands for Rating...The GVW is rated at 5000 lbs.

Edit: Please have patience for me, I'm dumber than a stick. Is that saying I can tow up to 5,000 lbs???? Or what?

oops - your right Bill a usual.
so in laymans terms, Gvwr is what maximum weight the manufacturer says the truck and the payload should be. so GVWR=5000, Shipping weight = 3950 then max payload(including Passengers) = 1050 = hence the term 1/2 ton.

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

This means the truck is rated at 5000 lbs.

It means the Gross Vehicle Weight shoud not exceed 5000 lbs.

It doesn't mean you can carry 5000 lbs.

It means you shouldn't carry over 5000 lbs.

This includes the weight of the truck and driver.

So, if your truck weighs 4,000 lbs, and you weigh 200 lbs, you can only safely carry an additional 800 lbs., by Fords GVWR.
