I'll be getting an ATS housing Friday and want to know if the turbo has to come off to install it. Would it be wise to R&R the o-rings anyway, even though they are not leaking (not that I can see anyway) and possibly make it easier to install the housing?
On a side note, my BTS VB showed up today and the rest of my goodies(except the DP, not until 6-4 ) will be here Friday. It's going to be a loooooong 2 more days at work.
While the ATS Ported Shroud Compressor Housing may cost more than other methods of fixing Compressor Surge (like a new compressor wheel), changing to the ATS housing doesn't require removal of the turbo or balancing of the rotating assembly. The savings in removal/installation time, downtime and the labor cost of turbo assembly balancing make the ATS Ported Shroud Compressor Housing an excellent choice for solving your compressor surge problem.
Well i installed my ATS housing with the turbo on the truck. However i did manage to overtorque the bolt at 7 o clock that holds the compressor to the backplate. I just left it at that and when i pulled the turbo later to do donuts i put a bolt and nut in there. Make sure you are careful retorquing the bolts, to 200 in/lbs or 17 ft pounds, take your pick. I have a few pics of the install if you would like.
It does add airflow, and does cure surge. You could say it gives power. It looks a hell of alot cooler.
Does the ATS housing add power? Or just control the surge?
I don't believe the ATS claims to add power, but when your turbo flutters, I can't see much power being made there. It is not yet a big enough problem for me.
I installed my ATS a few days before going on vacation. Pulled the TT 2k miles to SW Arizona. Absolutely no surge and egt's are better. Pulled two or three real western 6%ers with a bad cross wind. Last year without the ATS the surge was miserable. Next, Spearco IC....
Thanks guys. Kris, I've checked your pics and thanks for the torque tip.
I was getting surge with the Superchips tuner, unloaded, so the ATS housing was a "must" with the DP chip.
