Unhappy engine turns but hard to start code p1401

Hello,
I have used this site for years by finding simialar problems others have had and using the responses to fix my own problems. But it seems that now I have run into a little Jam.
Two days ago my 2001 lariat 5.4 supercrew started making a clicking sound that got louder and faster the more I accelarated. Yesterday it started idling eratically. And today on my way home from work I did not think it was going to start at all. The egine would turn over but it would not start. I patted the gas and reluctantly it started and I was able to get it home. I connected my code reader and found it had p1401 and p0125 codes. I cleared them and restarted the truck which still did not want to start. This time it only gave the p1401 code.
When I went under the hood the first thing I noticed was that the wires on the dpfe sensor were melted to the tube going into the bottom of the egr valve. They were not burt all the way through but I cut out the bad spots anyway and spliced them back together. The truck still does not want to start and the service engine light has yet to come on to show there might be a problem. From all that I have read I can not find anywhere why a dpfe sensor would prevent the engine from starting. PLEASE HELP if you can.
Thanks.

I would start with the IAC valve for it not wanting to start. I would also check your exhaust manifold bolts and see if any are broken for the clicking noise.

IIRC, the 1401 is caused by a DPFE signal that is out of range and the 125 is for coolant temp not coming up as expected.

I would also make sure the IAC is working properly. Typically, if you can get it running and tap on the IAC with a screwdriver handle or something it will free it up. If it does the idle will go up momentarily. Replace the IAC or just clean it out if you're cheap like me.

The 1401 and 125 are a little more involved, but can be easily checked with a scanner. It might be more practical to take it to a pro and pay them $70 to worry about it.

Edit: forgot to mention that you should check the hoses to the DPFE sensor and the EGR tube to see if they are cracked. That might be the noise you hear.
