I was just researching this for a customer.

P1401 is going to be the sensor, you want the plastic one (newer style - I would go dealership) and not the metal one (Autozone).
P0401 is going to be the EGR system itself.
SEAFOAM it before replacing the sensor to clean out carbon.

Your conclusion about the P1401 code will be accurate almost all the time.
However, regarding the P0401 code, experience shows that the likely cause is 1) Crappy DPFE sensors, 2) clogged EGR ports, 3) everything else including the EVR solenoid and the EVR valve. Numbers 1 & 2 will account for over 95 % of all occurrances.
Seafom won't get anywhere near the EGR system, so don't bother.
