I'm considering starting a restoration project on a ‘48 to ‘53 pickup. My goal is a daily driver/mild street rod. I’ve “restored” a handful of rust buckets and use to work as an airplane mechanic rebuilding old helicopters, so I have a decent skill set. I'm in a research stage now looking for initial purchase costs, parts availability and the like. I've cruised through this site and a couple of truck mags and am slowly gaining knowledge into what is out there.
One thing I’m having difficulty with is getting a good idea what can I expect to pay for project truck. I know this is a difficult question given the vagueness of this post but any help would be appreciated.<O</O
Welcome to the board. To answer that question would be vague as well, but you knew that. Anywhere in the "rust belt" expect to pay more for a less rusted truck. Down south, you'd be able to find a less rusted truck for less, but the hot sun and ocean air will patinia-ize the body. From experience, you'd be better off finding a complete as possible truck, or someone elses project either done or near done. I got mine in several pieces, missing more, and what's left is half rusted. But mine was free. FWIW, you get what you pay for, hopefully. Good luck.
PS: Probably not the answer yer looking for, lol. But I'd say anything less than $1000 will net you a "project"
Thanks for the quick reply. I initially expected $1000 would get me something that would at least roll. There seems to be several sources for fenders, hoods, and other body parts. Although it's difficult to assess the quality of these parts from a mag or website.
