Transmission Woes

I have a 01 X 7.3 PSD 105K Miles Diablo Sport tuner (tow mode), Pulled my boat out of water yesterday at Lake Cumberland (22' fishing boat), had trouble making it up hill...no power, well got to top and the transmission was puking fluid everywhere...looked like from the front of the transmission near the tc...I am not much of a mechanic but is the transmission fried or what?
Thanks

Were you able to drive it home? Do you have a tranny temp gauge? Were you just pulling a boat out or did you do anything else prior? These transmissions have been known to puke fluid from time to time, usually with a trailer in tow and some sort of low speed manuvering. However if on the trip home you still had a lot of slippage and problems like you did on the boat ramp, then I'd say it's toast. Once the T/C burns that fluid, it takes the rest of the tranny with it. Check the fluid and look for discoloration and also a burnt smell.

Checked the fluid and did not register on the stick....could not move the truck...give it gas and it just revs up and moves slightly...had it towed home...did not smell the fluid

truck was sitting for 2 days prior to pulling boat...idled for about 30 mins waiting in line at ramp..no trans temp gauge

Well for a few bucks you could add some fluid to test the tranny. However with what you just described I would imagine that it's toast anyway.

I would recommend a BTS transmission. I've had one on my truck for the past few weeks and it's a night and day difference. Depending on where you live, you could possibly have a dealer near you. Or you can order one directly from Brian and have it shipped to you. They have the absolute best reputation and customer service you will find anywhere. There's quite a few folks on this board who also have a BTS. www.brianstruckshop.com

You aren't too far from Rocky at Rockin-S Performance. He's a BTS dealer. That's where I went to get mine.

OK I had a mechanic look at the truck and he placed transmission fluid in and checked everything and the truck worked fine...I towed my boat around 200 miles (5000 lb boat) no real problems except I did notice that it did not pull up hills very well...at the dock I went to straighten trailer and I could barely pull the boat up the incline without full throttle, it did dump some fluid out...replaced with about 3/4 quart of fluid...my main concern is the lack of power on hills and the ramp...the trans temp on my diablo predator never went above 190 on the trip down to the lake and was around 180 when it puked out the fluid...after I replaced the fluid and drove home no real problems, but did not pull boat out of water or tow home...is this a trans problem or a tc problem? Any suggestions or things to check

Thanks

If it is a TC Problem then it is a Transmission Problem. The front seal on the stock 4r100 is a pos. The sealing lip once hot and puking will not heal itself. the slipping on the ramp sounds like either a TC problem and or a tranny issue, If i were you I would at least drop the pan and look at the fluid and see what else is in there with it. ie small pieces of TC and or clutches. If it is well then i also highly recommend the BTS tranny. If you have concerns call Brian and talk with him he's a great guy and willing to help.

I don't know where you're located, but if your in here in the West, I would recommend John Wood for a transmission rebuild. As long as your running less than 375 HP, you can pick one up for $2900, if you go there to have it installed, add $400. About the same price as a Ford HD, but a far better trans.

No question asked warranty.

If on the other hand, you're located somewhere in the South I would certainly get to BTS for his trans.

Both of these guys do outstanding work, and both stand behind their products!!

Does the fluid come out of the weep hole on the inspection cover or from the top of the transmission? Sounds to me like you are in need of rebuild. I think it is slipping burning up the fluid increasing the pressure in the tran and pushing it out of the top.

Same exact thing happend to a friend of mine. He was towing in overdrive up a steep grade hill and continued towing up and over about another 20-min. When he got to his destination and stopped briefly the Tranny puked out all the fluid. There's a breather hole on the top of the Tranny. When the Oil gets so hot that it expands it looks for the path of least resistance. This breather port is it. If you crawl underneath your truck and reach or look up and around the Passenger side of the Tranny Closer towards the Bellhousing you'll see it. 90 degree port stickin off the Top and pionting south.. Well To make a long story short I filled it up with fluid and he drove home. I advised him to have the fluid and filter changed and to get it checked out for any damage. No damge done! He is still towing with it to this day. Got lucky is my guess. But I know he had to of done some damage. You don't boil your tranny fluid puke it out and not incurr any damge. Your truck sounds like it sufferd some damage. Clutches burned, TC also not holding.. Sorry Friend..Country
