I just recently bought a 03 ford F350 with the 6.0L and well i know the cold effects these diesesl, my question is in cold weather, say 20 degrees or so should i plug it in? I can see doing it in the morning when heading to work but when im at work i wont be able to do that. Will it be ok to start it cold in that temp?
It will be fine. When it's cold, I let the glow plugs heat up a bit longer after the light goes out. You can double cycle them but just leaving the key on for say another 10 seconds before you start it does the same thing.
One other thing - When it gets below 32 go to the owners manual for the correct weight of oil to use. I believe it will say 10W30 diesel oil down to 0 degrees. This will help a lot with cold starts and help with the oil knock you will hear when it gets really cold. Brrrrrr. winter I don't want to think about it for another 5 months.
Depending on how cold it gets there in winter, try 5/40, 0/40, or 0/30 - all synthetics. The order I listed them is starting from warmest to coldest. Trust me, where I live, we know COLD!
