I live in California and I own a 74 Bronco w/ a 351W that has no smog equipment. Does any one no when this vehicle will become smog exempt?
I want to start fixing it up but what's the point if I cannot drive it.
You need to call the Cali DMV, or CARB, or whatever the hell you guys call it out there.
But in general -- whatever emissions equipment originally came with the truck for that model year -- it's gotta have it. You can install a newer engine year without running into problems, but an older engine year is a no-go. In fact, even if the engine passes the smog test for CO and NO and all that, if any part of the emission system is missing, it fails. I don't think it will ever be 'exempt'-- 1966 and older cars and trucks just had a PCV at most, and usually a "road-draft tube" that was it.
The only part of that reply I would be careful of is when you put a newer engine in. In some cases if they know its a newer engine they may want to emmissions test it for that year engine. As told by the testing facility in AZ. So it probably isnt a good idea to devulge too much information that could open whole other can of worms.
IF, and this is a big 'IF', they do not mess with the current law as it is written then 2004 will be the year the 1974 model year will become smog exept. it is set to be a rolling exeption of 30 years old starting in 2004. This was the comprimise the state legislature made when the 1973 and older models became exempt. As it stands to get your rig going you need to get ALL the equipment for the 351W you installed. Provideded you have a newer engine than the '74 chassis. All numbers must match on the engine and a Smog Ref. must visually inspect and certifie it.
