Rear Differential Temp

Hello all....Haven't posted in a good while...Just reading from time to time.

Got a question for yall.

How hot should the rear end differential feel to the touch after...say about a hour driving at 70 mph at 85 degrees ambient temp.
Was under my truck today checking on the drive shaft (been getting a little vibration at slow speed) and when I put my hand on the pumpkin it felt hot to me.
Don't really know for sure if it's normal or not...Can hold hand on it for about 3-5 seconds then must remove hands....Is this too hot.

Well, if you'd been hauling much of a load you'd have 3rd degree burns! Those diff covers get HOT, like 375F and burn and peel all the paint off a stock cover if you even think about towing anything. I've got a Mag-Hytec that holds 6 qts and a temp gauge, and towing a grade in the summer it exceeds 200F.

Yes and thanks for the reply....However...Did a search in the Super Duty and Heavy Duty forums....found what I was looking for.

Seems to be normal temperature wise...Just never really noticed it before.

My gauge doesn't move for 30 minutes, then it jumps up to 250, this is the hottest fluid in the vehicle after it gets to temp. You don't want to touch it when its that hot...
