I have made two trips with my 2001 F350 auto CCLB 4x4 to central nebraska, 350 miles each way. Been towing a flatbed H+H with 3 quads, so about 3400lbs. While not towing, my truck has been gettin around 17 to 18 mpg. While towing I get 13. this just seems not that good. What do you think? Also seems to lack a little power. I can't imagine what I would get if I were towing 8000lbs. Truck is stock except for the 6637 mod.

I get about the same mileage as you with my F250 6.0 L diesel (around 17-18 with no load, and around 13 mpg hauling a 9000 pound Airstream travel trailer. I have wondered if larger diameter tires or a higher tranny gear ratio might help mpg with no load.

I get 17-18 empty, and 9-11 towing my 14K 5er. When I went full time RVing in 1999, I towed stock from Washington, DC to Mission, TX and didn't much care to ever tow with a stock truck again, and then the mods began and they're still ongoing today with yet another new chip and other goodies.
I get between 13-14 with 8k in tow. I have a 6-spd which I'm sure helps a bit.
Hello DPWilson, I see that in spite of your extra gear (diablo predator, 5" exhaust, 2.5 in leveling kit with 285/75/16) including a tuning chip, larger tires and low resistance exhaust system, your fuel mileage has not improved much from stock. Did you find any specific gear helping with your mpg when traveling light?

wish I could get milage like that have two 16ft enclosed trailers one flat nose one v-nose think both weigh about same empty about 2300 lbs
towing both trailers loaded at about 700 lbs or empty I get 10 mpg, no trailer since new torque and trans rebuild 15.75 at 70 mph
can tell less turbulance with V-nose but same milage
to improve gas millage you look at your tires pressure, Eng oil, and RPM , if you check your tire pressure and 5 psi you will increase your millage by 10%, changing your oil to synthetics will also increase your millage by 10% or more limit your speed to 2200 rpm will sure boost your millage some more, I bet you if you this I will guarantee you to get at least 20 miles per gal empty and 17 loaded, I get 600 miles to the tank before the low fuel light comes on. running 2001 F350 4x4 dually.
simonz, do you have a LB or SB truck? I can get over 500 on my 29 gal tank, but I have yet to see close to 600. I just did a 800 mile run (Panama City, FL to DFW, no tow load) -- filled up to the neck with a little over 29 gallons at 520 miles (just under 18 mpg) in Monroe, LA, and still running that fuel now. Just below 1/2 tank...
