My daughter is interested in a slightly used Jeep Liberty. Does anyone have any experience with these? She is getting ready to go to college and I want her to have something that is reliable, safe and not too sporty. Any info would be appreciated.
i don't know about the liberty, i drove them some when i was stationed out in greece, not bad i guess.
i say something that to me is nice along those lines is a nissan xterra, i bought one a few months ago and have put about 8k miles on it, 40k total miles on it.
i frequent a forum sometimes and they seem pretty reliable and sturdy cars.
i scored a good warranty also, 4 years, 50k miles, the miles were on top of the miles already on the car.
down graded from my psd to an xterra to have extra cash because i started attending school full time.
a couple freinds bought one new a few years ago, they got the manual tranny and love it, the only gripe is that thier childs seat only fits in the middle middle seat
I tell you one thing, never back it up into anything by accident. Consumer Reports was right, easily can cause $5000 worth of damage from the spare tire being hit. Seen it myself on two vehicles.

I think the tiny unibody will be safer on the pocketbook than a truck like mine, which she would probably hit something every other day in the school parking lots.
Would removing the spare from the back minimize damage from backing into something? Maybe I should look for one that already has the dent in back and save myself the 5k.
We have a 04 that we got as a left over with the 3.7 v6 its the sport model and my wife drives about 100 miles a day and we have had no problems with it.It has almost 60,000 miles on it in 2 1/2 years.
My friend's mother has one. It's one of the early couple years, and she's got about 65k miles on it now. I think it's fun to drive, but in a "trucky" way. Rides a little rough, but the seats fit my back and butt perfect, so it's all-day comfortable for me. Pulls trailers pretty good (shhh...don't tell her ), and goes great in the snow. Gas mileage isn't great, but it's solidly into the 20s with the V6 and auto trans.
Only significant problem she's had is with the auto tranny, but (without getting into details) let's just say an incident in the vehicle's early life was probably the root cause of that. Warranty took care of it, and she's been happy with it since then.
I have an 06 and love it, it's safe, heavy and reliable and climbs like a mountain goat, great in snow. MPG could be better, 18-22 with the V-6, but it is heavy. If you get used, make sure the ball joint recall has been done, most likely will have.
Thanks for the advice. We bought one yesterday. I found out about the ball joint recall on Edmunds.com so I had that done before we signed the papers. Got 2 new ball joints, and alignment and new tires thrown in. Now we just pray she doesn't run into anything.
They are rugged, don't worry about the unibody. It's not like a car unibody where it only has a front and rear frame section, it has full framing with the body welded to it. Will take a lot of abuse, I wheel my hard with no issue. She will be safer in the lib, -vs- a civic or yoda, just uses more petro as it weighs in at around 4,000 pounds, thats heavy for a small suv, but can add to the safty aspect.
Im not certain that I would trust any Chrysler product to be reliable. If she is interested in that kind of vehicle, Id go for a Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or even a Ford Escape over a Liberty.
Chrysler products have such horrible resale value for a reason.

My neighbor accross the street has a Liberty not sure what year, but the tranny was always having problems when it was new. I think they've had it for a few years now and seems to be they got the bugs worked out of it. My boss' wife has one and he doesn't really like because of the gas milage. My boss likes to drive about 80-85 a lot so that doesn't help at all.

wow i was gonna say the same thing... i guess great minds think a like
yea get her one of those 4 cylinder escapes good on gas and damn reliable
I made her test drive the escape and trailblazer. She said the esacpe was too soccer mom, and the trailblazer felt like a boat. The liberty has that cute look to it that 18 yr old girls seem to like. (No offense to any guys out there that have one). I won't buy a toyota or honda so those options are out of the question.
If she is going to be the one paying the repair costs, let her get whatever she wants. She is 18 afterall.
However, if you are one the fitting the bill for repairs, I would tell her to look at something other than a Chrysler product. I would explain to her that Chryslers dont exactly have the best reputation for quality and reliability.
I understand that she likes the Liberty, but at the same time you dont want to end up with a vehicle thats going to be a moneypit, especially considering she is at an age where people dont tend to make a lot of money that they can afford to be making repairs on a vehicle all the time.
