Replaced the fuel filter on the Ford today (60,000 miles) and just for grins I cut it open. Holy crap, for what gas costs you would think the refiners could filter it a little better. At least get the chunks out. Guess that's what the filter on the truck is for.
I had the same deal changed my filter at 75K, and the fuel filter was dirty, it was clear when it ran with flow, but I reversed the flow, and watched the crud come out. I haven't driven the truck since. I haven't had to tow anything, so my gas gauge hasn't moved either
i belive it was KREWAT who also mentioned to me to reset the computer after the change.
the mayjor thing i noticed was that it didn't have to downshift on inclines that (before the change) it would normaly shift down on. it seemed like it was getting ample fuel for the incline/hills!
Thanks, now I know and will be resetting it with every filter change. Just un-hook the negative battery cable, leave the lights on for awhile and then re-connect the cable?
I just changed mine with 65K on the clock and what a differnce it runs like a new truck but I will reset the computer to see if it gets any better. I bought a new set of plugs but now I'm not sure they need to be changed my problem was the fiter. I can't wait until we pull the trailer again to see how much of a change it will make with a load behind it.
I changed my filter a couple of weeks ago at 23K and reset the PCM for all those reasons stated earlier. I took the 5th camping last weekend over Donner summit 7,300 ft and the truck towed with no problem. Gas milage actually has increased when towing since the gear change and new fuel filter.......8.6 mpg this trip. I'll total all the fill ups towing this summer to get an average mpg. I haven't driven enough (non-towing) to see how the city driving mpg has changed.
After you buy the removal tool it only costs around $10 per fuel filter change. I've been changing mine every 10,000miles or so. The hardest part for me was pulling the filter out of the dam holder.
I made the mistake of using a fram fuel filter on my last change because the local stores didn't carry the motorcraft brand fuel filter for some reason. The fram filter is about half the size of the original filter....seems strange to me. I'm going to just wait till the next change is due before I go ahead and just order a motorcraft one, unless anyone knows of any problems with using the fram instead....
