I have a F250 4X4 4spd pretty sure that it is a 390 with a 1405 edelbrock with 35"s on it and 4.1 in the rear and I get around 10 MPG. does that sound about normal or do I have some problems? I know that I need to change the air filter but I was wondering if anyone out there had a similear setup that was maybe getting more milage? I have to drive about 30 miles to work on way and gas is getting too friggin expensive for me to continue that. thanks for some much needed help

Never assume anything...especially if Ford made it. As original, your "High Boy" is a 360.
These trucks are shaped like a brick, so don't expect gas mileage to be any better than your getting now. The new trucks with better aerodynamics, FI, SOHC or DOHC engines don't get much better than 10 MPG city.
10 mpg sounds a bit above average in my experience. I had a 76 F-350 with a 390 and it got 8mpg. period. Didn't matter much what you did to it. It just got 8.
Dont know what I get in they City... down the Hwy I average 10-11 mpg and Ive been allllll thru the motor... im suprised it gets that much - thats 93 octane btw

Yeah, I figgured that the engine was a 360 but uppon closter inspection it looks as if a PO has swapped in a 69 s code 390 somewhere along the way, it has C4AE heads, a 65 intake and can't remember what year the block came out to be. I have no idea what has been done to the engine, I think that it has a performance cam in it as well. I figgured that the milage was about topped out, but I was wondering if anyone was having better results with the engine/setup than I was, but it seems that I am on the high side of the hill in this instance. I meant to get out there today with a dowel and see if I could find out what the stroke was but got side-tracked after I drove it and forgot when it had time to cool off. It isn't the city that I am trying to improve as much as the highway that I wish would go up a few notches. most of my drive is in atlanta highways

Your Speedo is probably off, I hope your using Hwy Markers to calculate your MPG -
If you have the dough to drop on it, there is a overdrive setup that goes between the bellhousing and the transmission. Its on my list of mods for the winter time. It gives you a OD for each gear, while its not as flashy or automatic as the Gearvendors setup, but it costs at least 1k less to purchase depending on your wheeling and dealing skills and a good bit of Luck
yeah, I figgured that my speedo is about 10% of with the 35"s so I factor that in as well. I was actually thinking about putting in a NV4500 and fixing the little problem that they had in them but I wonder abut the strength of the tranny when I go to rebuild the engine. I am trying to get about 500 RWHP out of the engine and I am worried that I will break the trannie. I wanted to go with that trannie instead of the NP435 cause I think that it shifts better. But that little tidbit might go the the way-side in lou of strength of the NP435 and an overdrive unit. I know that I have the space without having to do the front and rear driveshafts, just the intermediate shaft will have to be shortened
I have only got 250 miles on my 428 and it is getting 11 MPG. I was shocked. I didnt expect better than 8. I am hoping for 12-13 when it gets good and broke in.
That's not so bad! My 1976 highboy with a 390, 4 spd and 4.10 gears gets 11 mpg. highway, 8 mpg around town and 5 to 6 towing (depending on what you are towing of course).
I have owned it since 1982 and it has gotten the same gas mileage for the last 25 years. It is what it is, and ther is not much that can be done short of a very costly diesel engine swap.
Big deal...So you are getting 1 mpg better than I am...Hmmm? Maybe I'll stop using 2nd gear...Brilliant...LOL!
I didn't know this was a contest Most 390's are 8-9 city 11-12 freeway, actually at 60mph it got as high as 13mpgs. The transmission is being rebuilt right now but I don't expect anything better.
I am just joking around...there is not much difference between the older trucks, they are all terrible on gas.
I agree, my buddies 460 he's looking at 7mpg rain/shine/city/freeway as well as my father in law's 460, so I just kinda expected 12 and under when I bought the truck.
They may suck the gas, but wouldn't drive anything else.
