Head installation question

Hi,

I have a 1995 F150 5.0/302, EFI.

Took everything down to the heads to repair what I thought was a blown head gasket only to find 2 cut wires in the fuel injector wiring that was more than likely causing all the problems. That's been rectified but now I am down to putting it all back together.

Anyways, my "tuned" brother-in-law came over, and questions came up. He noticed I took the push rods out and said I need to find out if I have hydraulic lifters or not in order to know whether or not to adjust the valves.

I admit, I know very little about the inner workings of things like this. As far as I can tell from a factory manual is that I have hydraulic lifters but the Chilton manual says to "check valve clearance" but I don't know how to verify any of this. When I loosened the nut on top of each rocker, it "snapped" open and loosened very easily after breaking free, not a tension release type feel as if your releasing a nut off a spring load.

Any help anyone can throw my way to would appreciated. I really want to start driving my F150...been too long.

And yes, if you happened to look at my previous posts dating back to 2004, you would come to the conclusion that this has been a 3+ year project! LOL, actually, with the price of gas, I bought a nice Nissan after the initial break down to save some money. Truck has been sitting for 3 years. No, I am not proud of that one bit.

I believe all 302/5.0 engines since they came out in 1968 have used hydraulic lifters, as have most American V8s since the fifties. Many high performance V8 engines up to the '60s were an exception and did use solid lifters.

Rotate the crank around so that the valve is closed before tightening the rocker arm down.
