Tuner for towing - shift points impact. V-10 Excursion
I tow a heavy trailer with a V-10 Excursion running the 3.73 axles. I really should be running the 4.30 gearing...but... well I dont have them! In most cases, it really is not a problem with the 3.73s. It seems the tranny does need to wait longer before an upshift however - if the shift points were moved up to a higher RPM, I think it would work quite well for us.
What programmers allow for you to tailor the shift points?
I keep seeing mention of the various tuners impacting the transmission - firmer shifts most often mentioned - but I am looking for shift points to be moved up in the RPM range. From what I read here and elsewhere, programmers dont really do tons for real power output improvements in the V-10 - but perhaps a programmer would help me out by managing the tranny a bit differently. Any suggestions much appreciated.
Take a look at the manuf's websites, those who don't allow you to manually tweak the shift points and firmness use the tuners presets which are higher than stock. Superchips is reliable in allowing you to tweak each shift point and firmness. My Sniper goes by RPM or MPH, Superchips goes by a sliding scale of more or less.
If you're looking for shift points to get better and snappier try the Banks Trans Command module. It's well worth the $$. Not sure about a tuner that allows that though.
The Banks Trans Command does the same thing a chip is doing: changes the shifts electronically. All the major tuners should allow you to change shift points.
