Hello to all. I have spent the past two hours reading prior post by members who have asked for, and been given assistance on timing . This being said I havent been able to solve my problem. I replaced a 300-6 in my 1992 F-150. The distibuter was different, so I switchred them, and the whole wireing harness was replaced on the new engine with the one off of my original engine. Now the problem. I havent been able to get the engine to start to set the base timing with the SPOUT connecter removed. If I plug it back in it runs great. Starts right back up, Johnny on the spot. I have moved the distributer base almost 1/2" left and right attempting to get it to start, no luck. If I return it to the spot I marked ,if this happened, she will restart when you put the spout back in. My SPOUT has two wires going to it. I would like to get this corrected before I take it out on the highways and ruin something.
BTW it is firing at 10 BTDC with the SPOUT plugged in.

My book says " Vehicles equipped with a double wire SPOUT connector incorporate a special shorting bar into the connector. If this is the case remove the shorting Bar" I think that this is the gray plastic shunt? I have located the SPOUT thatks to someones photo I have made into a wallpaper till I get this fixed

Ok, I got back out there between some rain clouds, and advanced the timing to 20 BTDC. The idel speed went up some. I turned it off, unplugged the SPOUT, and still no restart till I replaced the SPOUT.

I think my ICM is bad, that the reason it will not run with the SPOUT removed. The ICM is supposed to feed a basic preset instruction for the coil to fire, and I'm not gettting it. No spark at all with the SPOUT removed. Thanks to all for your assistance.

This is the first time I have heard of an ICM failing this way so if the ICM fixes this, PLEASE LET US KNOW.
It will be wednesday, or thursday till I have time off to work on the Ford again, but I will advise on the results. I read somewhere here to only use a Motorcraft ICM, that a $100.00 for the fender mounted one at A-zone.
Ok, I am back to the Ford. We have had some grandchildren graduating from High school this week, hence been out of town. I was able to talk to a friend who is a good auto repairman, not a shade tree. His advice was to set it to about 30 BTC and then pull the SPOUT. He was thinking retarded timing. Well it still would not run at 30 with the SPOUT out.
I was wondering if any one knows where the timing mark should be at idle at normal operating temp with the SPOUT still in? That should get me very close in the ballpark, and save me some bucks for distriburor parts.
Yep I am using the timing marke on the passenger side if the crank pulley, and the long thin line on the harminic balancer. I painted it white before I put it in the truck about 10 days ago. I am pulling the small gray deal that is just outside of the ICM on the wheelwell drivers side with 2 wires, as in the picture.
