I was wondering if anyone has a 300 Six in their truck? I am thinking of putting one in mine to replace my 351M as it gets 10 MPG and I cant justify driving it. Would a six give me noticably better mileage with my 350 axle gears?
Thanks,
Bob
I have the 300 in my 66 and get 15-17 if I drive it nicely, (keepin my foot out of it ) which isn't easy all the time! And if I humm down the road around 60....
I have the 351Measly in my 77 4x, I get about 10-11, I keep thinkin about a swap, but 77 is a friggin smog year so I am thinkin of going to 400 so it still looks the same,
If ya had a 300 layin around I would do it. If not, I agree with Torque, cost more than you'll save.
I have a 300-6 in my 78' and i wouldnt trade it for the world. Its got a 0.060" Shaved head, 3-angle valve grind, minor port/polish work (done by me and my dremel), a Clifford 264H cam, Clifford 4bbl intake, Clifford headers, a Dual exhaust with super 40's, 35" mud terrains, 4.27 gears, and a 4-speed. Although i have to run 87 Octane gas, i see a little over 16 mpg and 220hp at the wheels. BUT!!..... get this.......390 lb-ft of torque at 1800 RPM's. It never overheats, never quits on me, loves to be revved (4500 RPM redline sucks tho) but throw it in 4th on the highway, you will never have to shift no matter what the hill grade is. Those engines friggin rule.
sorry 89** octane gas. But if your looking for a cheap mod that increases both horsepower and torque, use chevy 250-292 rocker arms. They are a 1.7 ratio versus the fords 1.6 and give you another .25" lift on your valves. They are a direct bolt on if you have 3/8" stud mounted pedestals (almost every ford 300 has them). Good luck and i hope you go with the 300
I've had a 78 F250 4x4 with a 351M, and an 84 Bronco with a 300 - the F250 actually got slightly better mileage (both were 4 speeds, lifted 4", running 33" tires). Average mileage was around 17 for the F250, and 14 for the Bronco. I get around 17 with the 360 in my 74.
With the 351 finely tuned, and a light throttle foot (this is the big one!!), it will get pretty decent mileage. Swapping will likely end up costing more than you save in the long run.
If your 351M is getting 10MPG, something is wrong.
1) Tune the carb
2) Give it a complete tune-up
3) Replace all fluids and filters
4) Unload junk in bed & cab
I got the 300 in line 6 in my 93, Wished for a V8, BUT with gas as it is now, Straight 6 is the deal. But as posted before, it will cost more than it's worth doing the swap. My.02!
It all depends on your budget. I might hurt some feelings here, but the 300 is just a better motor than the 351M. If you had a 400, I would say keep it and tune it. Myself, I would swap a 351M with a 300 in a heartbeat. Like Tha_Stepside said in a previous post, the 300 has a kind of "cult following". Once you own one, you never want to get rid of it. Just my opinion?.
I am a proud member of the 300 cult. I would go with the 300 anyday over the 351. It may not be the fastest engine, but it is the longest lasting, stongest, and will never let you down.
My F100 is a 360 4x4, NP435, running 33's and whatever the stock gears are (haven't gotten that deep into it yet). All I've really done to it is tune it (my vac. gauge is my best friend!), and stay out of the throttle. My mileage on the last two fillups has been 16.4 and 17.1 mpg respectively.
