i am looking for a timing cover for my 79 400. it seems to be a hard part to find. the parts stores (advance auto zone ane o reilleys) cant find it. i havent tried napa yet. Summitracing. com lists an aluminum one for like 130 bucks but i thought that was kinda pricey. any thoughts on where i can find one. i am completely rebuilding the motor so i really dont want a junkyard cover.

It sure is hard to find, because there isn't one. The timing cover on a 351C/351M/400 is part of the engine block. If you have a removable timing cover, it's not a 400 engine.
What is there is a just a flat plate (Ford part number: D6AZ-6B070-A). How many valve cover bolts do you have?

ok one other question. summit also lists a water pump backing plate. part # MEZ-WP123B. i thought that the front plate that we are talking about also served as the backing for the water pump. so what would be the purpose of this seperate plate?
that water pump backing plate is for a Meziere water pump, it's an aftermarket electric pump usually used for racing. what that particular plate does is block off the bypass return port because the Meziere pump doesn't use it, otherwise there'd be an open hole gushing coolant out.
it's commonly refered to as a timing cover for these engines.
the one summit lists is zinc plated steel, SES-5-65-04-201 , $128.95
Commonly called by who? Not by Ford mechanics or parts men..we know better.
And IF the above part from Summit is the same as D6AZ-6B070-A, you can buy it from FTE sponsor DIRECT FORDPARTS for $69.47.
And IF it's the same part, where do you think Summit is getting them? From Ford...
What y'all don't realize is...most of the help at dealers today could care less about your older trucks...and most just say...when you ask for something..."No, we can't get that any longer" Some times that is true...but some times it's a lie...they don't want to bother.
I care, because, not only was I a Ford partsman for 35 years, but I'm a car collector, too...and can tell you what is and what is not available..(thru 1989). I'm retired, and am not affiliated with anyone. The commission checks stopped in 1997.

everybody that doesn't know better i guess, and yeah, $70 is a lot better price than $130, if they are available. my main reason for identifying the timing cover was for COLEnMICHAELS66, to try to eliminate any confusion between the Mezere pump backing plate and the Ford cover.
it does suck when you go to the Ford parts counter and get blown off, or get sold the wrong thermostat.

thanks for the info. i can see how it could get confusing considering that the plate does serve both as a "cover" for the timing set and a back for the water pump as well. in any case tho thanks
