Hello! Well I am back home now and I am almost ready to get back to tinkering with my 1988 Bronco. I need to rebuild the engine snce I hydro-locked it before I left. I have a 302 H.O. in it right now. I want to keep a 302 in it and I do not want to replace it with a 351 even though I am sure that will still come up as a reply. I would like to turn it into a stroker engine. Where I can I find some good kits to buy? What changes would have to be made to the computer besides speed density to mass air? Hopefully I can get the engine pulled here in the next couple of weeks. Also, if any of you have done this, let me know how it went. Thanks!
I would not necessarily consider it an upgrade. I know there are 302 vs. 351 wars all the time. I would rather not get into my reasoning why, it would wind up changing the whole topic of my thread. I saw some some 331 kits that looked pretty nice. I don't think I want to do a 347.
Stay away from the 347 kits altogether. There are those who have done them and will love the performance, but from mechanical view it is a bad bore/stroke and displacement combo, IMO.
I like the 331 myself for a stroked 302. Get a good quality kit with forged crank and pistons/rods, preferably forged in an american mill.
For ecm work I like the maf conversion but you need to talk with kemicalburns, he can name alot more companys who can work with you for a good electrical system.
you will need maf or run a carb unless you find a speed density ecu that can be tuned with a tweecer but honestly that is a very time consuming task. in your case look to buy a harness from here http://rjminjectiontech.com/?p=26 then locate any mass air ecu. you should consider running aftermarket heads but keep your stock 5.0 intake as it flows very well and will help in the low end power of this motor build. you only need to run forged parts if you plan on running spray or forced induction. otherwise cast would be fine and cheaper. there are many kits available, contact some local machine shops for price quotes etc. on that part of it. then i would contact compcams mention the motor build, intake type and heads your running. specify your going mass air and get what ever cam they suggest. also mention what you plan on doing with the bronco. this rig is in no way a drag racer so dont let them suggest a cam that builds power to hi in the rpms it wont do you any good.
what tranny is your motor bolted to. thats the next question.
I was hearing that those ford racing MAF conversion kits are no longer being made but I will try and find one around still. I have an AOD. I rebuilt it not too long ago and used borg-warner cluthes that are kevlar. I also put in a transgo shift kit.
dont buy the ford racing maf kit. its way over priced. the link i provided is the same basic thing but cheaper and built by a bronco guy on another website.
With the AOD, wouldn't he be just fine using a mustang mass air setup?? The mustang setup would also be good in the future if you decided you ever wanted to tune it with a Tweecer, since the is so much information about tuning the mustang eecs. Also, you could find the parts for a mustang mass air swap very easily.
he would be using a mustang setup in theory. a mustang harness is not long enough so you need to splice and such to make it work. the link/harness i showed is a plug and play setup and requires less work. he would still be using a mustang computer like an a9l,a9p etc...
Well, I just got back from the salvage yards today. I was able to find a A9P ecu from a 1989 5.0 mustang. I have looked all over the place for mass air meters from a stang and could not find any. So I purchased a mass air meter from a 1994 Thunderbird with a 4.6 liter engine. I also checked the injectors on the Thunderbird and they are 19lbs. just like my Bronco. Also, it has the same 4 prong plug in as the Mustang and looks identical to that of a mustang, would this work? I have 30 days to take it back if it does not.
Aright, here is a picture of the animal I am talking about. The shorter number on it is 4E02. Also, Kemical was the link you provided further up to bronco graveyard? I could not seem to find a wiring kit there.
