I have an '82 Bronco with an ignition problem. I have run tests and nailed the problem to the ballast resistor. I have the replacement from my local dealership but I am having trouble locating the original ballast resistor in the truck. Any help locating the ballast resistor would be greatly appreciated.
After looking at the simple diaghrams I have at the office, the resistance wire should be close to the ignition switch, possibly doubled up with the red wire that goes to the 2 wire plug at the spark module, and also leads to the " " on the coil.

Thank you Mr. Guidry for the location. I belive I have located it but I'm having a hard time trying to disconnect the wire. I can see where it is plugged in but I can't reach it. Do I need to remove the cluster panel and the entire dashboard to get to it? Thanks again for the help.
I believe removing the dash pad would be easier than the cluster,as long as there is an open cavity below the dash pad to reach your hands into.

Harold,
Ford has been using resistor wire instead of ballast resistors since the early 60s. Not unheard of, but the resistor wire(often red, about six inches long), unlike ballast resistors, rarely fails. Are you sure you don't have an ignition switch problem or break in the wire that goes from the switch to the terminal on the coil ?? A bad resistance wire or resistor usually manifests itself as the engine firing up during cranking but does not run when the starter is disengaged. Would like to learn from your experience;let us know how it goes.
Thanks to everyone that I have been recieving advice from. After calling around to many places, I have found out that an '82 Bronco does not have a ballast resisitor, but only has a resistance wire; and this is the replacement part that I have. The only problem I have now is that I need to know where to connect the wire. It would not connect in to the ignition switch because the connectors are not of the same type. After looking at the diagram in the Haynes automotive repair manual for '80-'96 Broncos, it appears that there are connectors for the resistance wire somewhere along the wire that goes from the BATT end of the ignition coil to the ignition switch. It is hard to explain but if anyone has the manual above, look in Chapter 5 and you will see what I mean. But even better, if anyone knows where to connect the resistance wire, please let me know. Thanks again for all the help.
It's inevitable! You're gonna have to cut the tape every 1/2 foot are so til you find it. You don't think they would have made it easy on you,do you? I wish I could give more on the location and I sure hope that is the problem and not just the Ign. Switch. Please double check at the switch first.

Anyone know if the 79 351m had a wire or a ballast? I just simplified all my wiring. The bsdllsdy is the only thing I don't have. It did fire up. But, it soulnded like the start was still spining when I shut it off. I believe its all wired correctly. I used the diagtrams. Any suggestions.
Do you really need this resistor wire/ ballast? I just striped my engine of only the basic starting wires. I don't have a resistor on it. What will it hurt?
Does any one know why a new starter will keep spining after the engine has started. New key switch too.
Thanks.

starter solenoid , or the overrun has gone bad in the starter, or maybe you have the solenoid wires backwards.
