One of the four bolts behind the compressor wheel backed out and wedged against the compressor? Wow, check to see how many aluminum shavings is in the rest of the system. That's why you should use blue loctite on those bolts!

6637 is only ~$40 and is usually free to install. Since you have an early 99, you'll have to buy some clamps and procure some type of adapter to fit the filter. Some here have done it with PVC, but I don't know exactly which pieces you might need. It's pretty easy, though...
