Unhappy E4OD Overdrive Woes

I have been having intermitent trouble with my '92 F250 7.3 IDI with an E4OD not going into fourth gear. I have no flashing "OFF" light. The problem seems to be heat related, I can drive the truck approximately 20 miles empty before the overdrive quits working, however it will happen much faster when I am towing a heavy load. If I drive less than the 20 miles it will work just fine. I drove it today until it lost overdrive and once it did I checked the voltage through the FIPL and found it to be working correctly. Any ideas on where I should look next?

Get a code reader, got mine at WalMart for 30 bucks Can.$, covers 81-95 Ford. Pull off the trouble codes from your PCM, will save you a lot of potentially expensive chasing a problem. Fluid level OK and when was your fluid and filter last changed, do you have an external oil cooler for towing, the bigger the better, cooling lines not plugged or kinked restricting flow?

Welcome to a great web site, lots of help to be had here!

Unless you have noticed other strange behavior from the trans, I might be tempted to think its an electrical problem.

The tranny fluid should be bright clear red, if its a slightly darker red, than it could indicate a slip condition.

Check all the trans electrical connections especially the one on the right side with the tin cover, remove the tin heat shield, remove the solenoid connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling up on the wire harness. To install push down until a click is heard. Always reinstall the tin heat shield.

Your looking for corroded, bent or missing pins and water etc.......

The only code was a 23 (FIPL). The fluid is bright red and not burnt. I had this rebuilt about 1000 miles ago, and of course when I take it to the tranny shop it will not act up. I also replaced the MLPS and connector at that time. I will be installing an external cooler this weekend.

I am having trouble with a 1992 F250, this transmission will not shift on it's own, I can shift it manually, I also noted the tach is not working. any suggestions?

This usually indicates a bad contact, or bad computer or possibly a faulty tack sensor. Again, try to pull the fault codes - if any, and check the condition of the fluid.

Will is still go through all four forward gears?

mikegr- the PCM computer that tells the trany when to shift needs to have the engine rpm information. Your tach sensor may be bad, its the big nut sensor on the drivers side of the injector pump gear housing, check wiring, sensor out and away from steel parts, 2000-3000ohms between the two leads. LOL

Heat related sounds like a burnt, or seriously worn out clutch that is worn down to metal to metal, that will hold cold but not hot and if it slipped enough to wear out real fast but not "burn" then the fluid might not be toasted.
Also, burnt fluid can be changed out before a sale to hide the broblem.

The transmission fluid looked pretty good, put some on white paper and saw a little of the gray come out around the edges, it has gotten a little hot but not go bad, does need to be changed since it has been awhile.

Thanks I will check these things out.
