The most accurate place would be in the manifold, just past the #4 cylinder. There is a flat space in the manifold. It is closer to the true amount of heat the engine is putting out.

You don't think one person's advice is enough?

LOL, know it was enough, u just told me dont put it in the down pipe, im wondering if there are other options ur advice is always appreciated. thx kris
I bring it up because ive heard people talk about temps pre and post turbo and im trying to figure out which is a better way to protect the turbo, i know our PSDs are overkilled on the coolant of the engine but down here in FL in the summer, i think i could heat the turbo up in a hurry

Mine is in the manifold.
What cracks the manifolds IMO is cranking that tapered NPT thread down to the hilt.
Just snug them in, they won't come out or leak.

...and when you tapping, don't try to cut all the threads at once. Get it started, then back it out. Go in a little further, then back it out. Do that until you get where you want to be.

I do not know why people do it, but they think that high EGT's will take out the turbo. If you wanted to measure the temperature of the exhaust coming out of the turbo, sure you would want it in the downpipe. BUT the fact is that the pistons are aluminum. Pure aluminum's melting point is 1228*F but it will not start melting at EGT's that low. The point of putting the probe as close to the cylinders as possible is because you want to monitor temps of the pistons!

Kris has just reminded us of the most important part of monitoring the EGT's
I would like to add to that, is what the probe is made of will take nearly double the temperature and will not get so hot that it breaks off. If you've pushed your engine to that point, you have bigger things to worry about than a broken pyrometer probe!

You are right, most of them are. They run a 950-1000* redline EGT limit. The way the manifold and turbo setups are designed it is hard to get a thermocouple in the manifold without only measuring one or two cylinders without restricting flow.
