Question How strong is this tranny?

How strong is the 5 speed manual that comes in the newer 2wd F150's with the 4.2 V6?

I want to do a 6" lift with 35's and 4.30 gears, and was wondering if the tranny can take it as a daily driver/occation off roader without a ton of problems.

sorry, most people don't lift a v-6 and put big tires on it...kinda lacking in the torque department. wish I could be more help.

Personally I wouldn't do it. The M5R2 is pretty weak in my opinion for running such a tall gear set. If anything, I would run a BW T-18 or 19. They're pretty stout and have a real low first gear.

I wouldn't worry so much about the tranny...I'd worry about the engine not having the power.

They used to shove this tranny behind the 4.6 in the previous gen F150s, and as long as it wasn't used for anything other than moderate to heavy towing, it held up fine.

But, as a previous V6 F150 owner, I would NOT recommend putting any bigger tires on it than it comes with. That truck had a tough enough time on the highway with everything stock, let alone with 35" tires. IMHO it may not even hold 65 on the highway in 5th gear with the lift and tire setup you are talking about.

If you were buying a new truck, it would only be$1845 more to upgrade to the 4.6 V8 and the auto. Well worth the money if you are considering a lift and tire upgrade.

I wouldn't wory about the first gear ratio. It has a good 3.75 first, and its low but not quite a granny low.

As for power, it does just fine. The tires on it now are 32" with the stock 3.55 gears. Having 34-35's with a 4.30 rear shouldn't be much of a problem. The freeway is where it shines. Here in califronia I go up the sierra nevada mountains all the time and on steep mountain sides Im in the fast lane passing everything else on the road. 4th gear on the steepest grades it will do 70mph at a comfortable 2750rpm, and I still don't have it floored.

I didn't know they put it in the previous 4.6's. That makes me feel better that it is stout enough. Its a nice tranny to drive with. It has a short through for haveing a 2 foot shifter on it.
Like I have told people before... You can't argrue with a brand new free truck.

Why would I give up a good 5 OD manual for an old 4 speed. I don't need a first gear that low. Those are granny lows.

Put a higher gear ratio in your axles and you should be ok to lift it with 35's or so. Say 4.56s or 4.88s...

Didn't you hear? All Ford trannies in these new trucks are made from untempered glass components.

Just something I got a laugh at the other night. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...00-w-hemi.html

I don't have a real answer for your query though. Im just here to tell bad jokes, and make sure no one talks about Toyota in this forum

It would be good for a climber or maybe trails but Im going for a truck I can run on the beaches/dunes, and other open areas, with my quad in the back.

Off road would only be like 20-30% of my driving. I understood what you meant though.

I was thinking something like the 4.30 because it is a manual and doesn't have a torque converter. I believe also that if I put a 4.56 in my 8.8 I would have to modify the ring gear. IDK for sure yet.
