went to get a price on larger tires today.... and was told the biggest size i can run is my stock tire size? i know bigger ones will fit my truck is a 06 f-350, diesel with the 4x4 fx4 package and the plow package.......a little help guys?
The problem you might be running into is rim width. What tires are you looking at? The tire shop guy might not want to take responsibility for mounting a tire on a rim that is narrower than the tire manufacturer recommends.
Well, for the Toyos, the 35x12.5r18 M/Ts call for a 8.5" wide rim and the 35x13r18 A/Ts call for a 9" wide rim. That may be why he is telling you that you can't run them. I am running the 35x12.5r20s on my stock 8" rims (they also call for 8.5") without any issues though. I'm not sure if I would run the 13" wide A/Ts on a 8" rim though, as that might be getting too narrow.
Your best bet if you don't want to get different tires is to try to find a different tire dealer.
Try another tire dealer. Many of them now are going by the tire manufacturer's requests so not to encounter lawsuits. I had one local tire shop tell me he would not sell me 315/75/16 to put on stock rims because the manufacturer said it is not recommended.
high ho silver has hit the nail on the head. I've run into the same issues before with the chain-type tire stores. If you don't have any luck at those type stores, go to a smaller family owned tire shop. Of course, you will have to pay a little more if you go that route.
I was told the exact same thing when I went to go bigger tires at NTB (National Tire & Battery). They are just trying to perform a CYA (Cover Your A$$). They are just afraid that you will go too big a tire, and then drive off - just to come back tomorrow saying that it rubs on a tight turn and then they are held liable because they were willing to do a modification in the first place. I have '06 F-250SD 4x4. It had stock Conti 245/75/17 and I went BFG AT 285/70/17, with plenty of room to spare, I dont see why you could not go bigger than that! So in order to fix the problem, I had to sign a waiver stating that no matter what I purchased the tires. I did check around for prices and NTB had the lowest around here anyways.
I just got a 2007 F250 and it has the Goodyear AT/S LT275/65R/20 which is actually a 34.1" tire and this is from the factory and it has plenty of clearance. When i fist got my old 02 F350, I put 315's (35's) on stock rims and the tire shop said they done recommend it and they would wear out fast in the center. I put 40k miles on them without a single problem.

It's even worse. I've been looking at tires the past few weeks, and noticed plenty of places that will NOT go past what your vehicle had spec'd as stock.
I couldn't even get a quote for 265/75r16's, because my F250 comes with 235/85r16's stock - never mind that the 265's were an option on the same rims.
like i said this is crap! i went to the same tire dealer about 6 months ago(townfair tire) they have pretty reasonable prices... it was a different sales guy but he told me i could fit the 325/65/18's on my truck, the only rubbing question i would see is my front mud flaps but i can take them off and get differnt one? i dunno?
