I like the "scaler" idea.

A scaler is available at any harbor freight. It hooks to an 80 psi air hose. It has a 1/4" piston travel that pushes about 38 needles made of steel. Basically this things vibrates really hard and the needles knock off any NON solid material. welders use them to clean welds and chip slag. I think the harbor freight ones will be about $20.00 or so.

That's is most likely BS. Name just *one* hot sauce that lists it (or HCl) as an ingredient. The proper spelling would be "muriatic", BTW, and it is just the old name of the hydrochloric acid (HCl).
see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriatic_acid

muratic (and hydochloric too) LOVE RUST. You can buy it by the gallon (diluted) at Lowes or home depot. They usually have it for cement patio cleaning. will eat the rust out in no time flat.

Just slosh it in and make sure you do it where you don't mind making a mess though. It cleans up with water
You probably want to use baking soda dissolved in water before a final rinse with clean water.

"Technically" you are correct that Muriatic and HCL are the same. In common (and laboratory) usage they are not. The designations "Muriatic" and "Hydrochloric" delineate dilution levels. These terms mean totally different things to a chemist.

Yes, you may want to use a neutralizer before you paint. However, Muriatic is diluted to a point that flooding with water should be adequate.

If a guy really knew what he was doing (and could get his hands on it) he would use Inhibited HCL (aka Murihib) to eat rust out of things. This is especially useful for cleaning rusty gas tanks. It won’t attack the base metal like HCL will.

As to the hot sauce question: No, people would freak if you said there was Hydrochloric Acid in their food, as the name alone scares people. But what happens when you mix salt with tomatoes? Yeah… the acid in the tomatoes strips the Chlorine off the NaCl.

A chemist just would use "xy%" to show the exact dilution levels.

Of course, with enough water you can eventually wash it away; however, I'd definitely use a neutralizer just to be sure.

Yes, that's correct. But as you mentioned, getting one with inhibitors may not be easy.

Sorry, this is BS. HCl is a stong acid, and you'd need a stronger one to strip the chlorine off, and you won't find strong enough acids in tomatoes.

So what is the best paint to use on the reciever to come close to matching the factory like finish?

I was just noticing that my receiver has some surface rust. I would like to clean it off and then repaint. I did this previously with my Expy and after a year I started to see the rust reappearing in some of the same places. . . .

What I did then was use a rust converted (I think it encapsalates the rust. you put it on and a few minutes later it turns black.) and then painted over that with Rustoleum.

Wow you guys have really taken that question to heart. Sorry I asked .
Didn't think it would turn into a science test.

I think Tabasco vs. Cajun sauce really does make a difference when it comes to treating rust.

Right or wrong, what an experiment. I mean this sounds like fun. Go down to the drive through, get a big nasty burrito, a couple of coldies, and some hot sauce......
some for the burrito, some for the truck,,,drink, a little more for the burrito, and a little more for the truck,,,drink, heak, by the time it is all said and done, even if it does not work, and depending on how many coldies you had, it may not that big of an issue.
Mine is not even stuck, but I am gooing to get some hot sauce, a burrito, and some cold adult beverages!!!!!!!

I'm with 75F350. I'll go get a case of cold adult beverages! Gotta have something to wash down the burritos and hot sauce
