I went to slide the hitch into the receiver to find it won't go moer than an inch and gets bound up. I have sprayed PB blaster and let it set for a while and hammered the hitch in. It goes a little more then I have to pound it back out and start over to go a bit deeper. Is there a better way? I could use a heavier hammer but I worry it won't come back out.
my hitch was in the receiver for 13 years, and rust froze in there. i pulled the pin, and hooked it up to a loaded tandem dump truck with the brakes set. and pulled the 65,000 lb truck 4 feet, with the hitch not moving.
i broke out the oxy-acetylene torches, and heated the receiver up, then sprayed pb blaster in as many spots as i could. the next day, i did the heat and spray thing again. the third day, i chained the hitch to the 79, and had pone of the kids step on the brakes, expecting it to be a hard pull again. the dang thing fell out.
i cleaned the receiver tube and hitch real good, and painted the inside of the tube, and the hitch with rustoleum paint. that was 5 years ago, and the hitch still slides in and out with one hand.
Sounds like you have either rust or gunk buildup. Some steel will get layers of flakey rust that takes upa lot more room than steel so you will need to take a good look and scrape out anything that isn't fresh clean steel.
Use a putty knife, paint scraper, flat chisel, flat screwdriver etc and chip out all you can. If you have a sand blastter or maybe one of those air guns that has a scaler attachment, you might be able to save a little elbow grease.
After you get out the rust you might want to repaint or powder coat it. If you just have metal, you might grease it once in awhile.
Thanks, it is rust build up. Its coming along slowly. What if i get out my mapp gas and scorch the in side of the receiver real good. Will that burn out some of the rust or is it not hot enough?
Another idea. Some air guns have a chisel attachment, that would be slick for this kind of problem. It is usually called an air hammer and has several chisel attachments. This is what I would use if I was doing this job. Not sure if the usual chisel attachments are long enough tho.
The hot sauce has muratic acid in it. muratic (and hydochloric too) LOVE RUST. You can buy it by the gallon (diluted) at Lowes or home depot. They usually have it for cement patio cleaning. will eat the rust out in no time flat.
Just slosh it in and make sure you do it where you don't mind making a mess though. It cleans up with water but the rust will stain your driveway. Make sure you have junk clothes on and wear goggles and gloves.
