I have a 6.0 Ex and my wife has a 5.4 Navigator. I wouldn't want to tow anything with a 5.4. I don't care what they say tow capacity is, I'm way too spoiled.
Fords being foolish anway. They were being foolish every since they created the excursion. Who puts millions into develpoment of a SUV, releases it to the public and then doesnt market it. Not even one commercial???? I don't understand. Ford didn't kill the excursion, its the marketing deparment that did it.
It's 9K capacity (4x2 models) is more than adequate for most Excursion owners that I "see" here based on what they say they tow.
... I'm sure it fits the bill of 85% of Excursion owners based on how they use their truck on a regular basis.
HAH! I laughed out loud at that one!
I had the 3V 300HP 5.4L in my `04 F150 and it was pathetic at towing my 7klb travel trailer. My `03 5.3L Suburban blew it's doors off at towing the same trailer, but the Sub still wasn't quite powerful enough on the highway and didn't feel as stable as I'd have liked, so we ended up with our V10 Excursion. It's an order of magnitude better in stability and power.
Based on RATINGS, you are correct. Based on my experience, you're not.
I, too, had an 04 F150 SC w/the 3V, and 03 Expedition w/2V 5.4L and towed a 6500lb loaded horse trailer with it. I also have an 03 Avalanche with the 5.3L and of course the Excursion.
The Excursion handly won all towing competitions...but of course it has the most torque by a large margin. But all four were adequate but the 03 Expy was just too short for it to be a comfortable tow. My F-150 blew the doors off my Avalanche easily. Weird, huh?
One man's opinion, while valid & welcome, isn't the "tell all". You must the the other 15% I was referring to. Not sure how you expect me to be correct at YOUR experiences.
I really believe that when chevy comes out with a d'max 'burb that it wouldn't pay for the others to try to compete..Chevy just seems to have a knack for the SUV market.. Back in the really old days there was no competion for the 'Burbs and then in the early 70's Ford and Chevy came out with the Bronco and the Blazer and later Chrysler came out with Ramcharger and the other one (I forgot the name) and the full size Blazer beat them all. The ford and chevy came out with the smaller versions and both of them were a POC.Finally Ford came out with the XL expy and they're trying to market it as the same vehicle as a 3/4 ton 'Burb and it just isn't..
I love my "X" for towing now that I have added newshocks,a Hellwig sway bar,air bags,an air intake and 4" exhaust, but I didn't have to do all that on my '98 'Burb, just hooked up and went.. The problem was the 6.5 towing mileage and the 9500# tow capacity.. Last weekend's trip over the mountains got me almost 11 mpg towing a 9300# trailer and coming back I got 9.2 mpg with a ferocious headwind that had me downshifting on level highway...

The new Expy has beaten the new Sub' in most categories. I would imagine that if Ford stepped up and had to compete with Chevy again in the 3/4 ton, diesel SUV it won't come up short again.

Indeed...Ford marketing leaves a lot to be desired.
But "millions in development"? I think they spent a few thousand in development. C'mon...really...how much do you think they paid the guy who designed the suspension. Just the weakness of the springs must have been a reflection of his paycheck.

Have you guys seen the old '98 spy photo of the Excursion? it was a basic F250 crew cab with a back end of a Expy . I'll try to fine the pics out on my archive CD's
I remember a vehicle that Ford made in limited numbers to test the SUV market. It was a fullsize Bronco with 4 doors, 3 rows of seats and a generous cargo space in the rear. I think it was called the Metropolitan, or something like that. And it more closely resembled what came to be the Excursion, even though the Expedition hit the public market first. Only a few thousand were made, and I only saw one in the Tulsa area. I kept hoping they would make it publicly available and was disappointed when the Expedition came out. But when the Excursion arrived, I knew the vehicle I had lusted after had finally been released.
During the 1990's and early 2000's, a company called Centurion Vehicles of White Pigeon, Michigan produced special edition trucks branded Centurion conversion trucks. The company was acquired by Southern Comfort Conversions, Inc.
There are a couple of them running around our area and they are real animals.. They are very nice inside and they didn't cut back on the ride.. Yes,they started out life as either 3/4 or 1 ton crewcab trucks, but that's where the resemblance ends..One of the ones I see has many, many thousands of miles on it and he pulls a four horse trailer with it all over the mountains out here as they are avid trail riders...He actually has had a number of offers to sell it,but it'll probably go to the grave with him, unless he wills it to his son...
