I have an 04 explorer that cut off and will not restart. It shut off sunday while idling. I tried restarting it and it not stay running. I created a vaccum leak at the intake an it would idle but would not accel. I had it towed back to my place. I use to work for a Ford dealer as a line tech for about 10yrs, so I hooked you my solus (snap-on) scan tool to check the codes. Well I have not updated it in a while the it only goes to 03. Are the 03 and 04 stuff the same? I ask becouse my scan tool will not talk to the PCM. It tells me to make sure the ignition is on.
They change almost day to day sometimes you can reprogram the pcm next day same year you can't. If it won't start and idle try small amount of throttle If this works you could rap on the iac (idle air control value) as it may be stuck, you could even remove it and clean it with a carb $choke cleaner. If this does not work you may have a dirty maf sensor I have seen small particals get struck on the hot and cold wires, or just dirty more so if you use a k$n filter. If you unplug the maf sensor you can bypass it and the pcm will go into failure mode and should run fine if this is the case replace it.. remember this should turn on the check engine light. aand store a code in the pcm.. so if you do try this and then take it to a shop for repair let them know what you have tried. Good Luck You can try clean the maf sensor with carb an choke cleaner also
