im a first time owner of a diesel and i love it so far. i cant believe how much power it has. i had a 96 f150 with the 5.8 and i thought it had pretty good power but nothing like this has. anyway i had few questions. should i chip it and if so what do yyou all recommend. also i was thinking about getting the kn cold air intake but the ford dealer says not to do that. what do ya think? thanks ahead of time
Stay with the Stock air filter, as far as chiping goes, what are you planning to do with the truck tow ,race daily drive. I use my as a daily drive and run stock tune. and you already like the power so why change. my .02 good luck and welcome to FTE.
Leave the stock intake in, works better than K&N and most others. As far as tuning it get a SCT from LIPD call Matt there he will give you custom tunes for whatever you want to do. Keep in mind that running extreme tunes you will need to modify you exhaust system to help keep your EGT's down and you need to install a gauge set, boost, pyro, and trans temp.
You don't state what year your truck is. If you are going to tune it, consider how important your warranty is to you. A lot of dealers will void the warranty if they find evidence of tuning or other after market mods. Some people here have found mod friendly dealers and others have not. And if Ford gets involved the dealer may not make a diff. Just something to think about.
Continuing with the above post....if you're happy with the power you have, why chip it? Unless you have a specific need, it's a bit of a question....do I create warrenty issues or chip it?
Like the others have said Do Not use an A/M air intake, they allow more dust & dirt into the engine and are hard on the Turbo & Engine. The factory Donaldson system provides the best filtration available and provides more air than the engine can use until you get to 500+Hp (takes more than a tuner).
Also A/M air intakes can cause warranty issues.
If you want a "tuner" the only way to go is the SCT XcalII with custom tunes from Matt at LIPD (www.lidiesel.com).
Stay far far away from "chip/inline fuel" modules such as (Edge, Banks, Dr.P etc) they are hard on the engine and transmission.
Do a search and read about A/M intakes and tuners plus other mods for the 6.0 as there is a ton of information about this on FTE.
Also read the "Tech" folder at the top of the page.
As others have stated mods to your truck can void the FMC warranty at the dealer or FMC discretion.
did you gain any gas mileage after you chipped your truck? that is the main thing i am wanting to do.
Okay first off Do Not install a "Chip/inline fuel" device in a 6.0, they cause engine and transmission damaged. "Chips/inline fuel" devices were the used in Pre-OBDII vehicles and should Not be used in OBDII vehicles as they are hard on the engine and drive train.
Only way to modify the 6.0 is with a "Tuner" (ie SCT XcalII) with custom tunes from Matt at LIPD.
There are Economy tunes also Towing, and various levels of performance up to full race) availble that will increase your MPG, understand that MPG is also effected by your right foot, wether the truck is stock or "tuned".
