Thanks again guys, it started throwing lean codes on both banks so I did away with the whole system. ( and the truck was surging at WOT) Now I have a hose coming out of the valve cover going to atmosphere, no lights,no surge.
I don't us a separator, but had to do something to keep the big puff of smoke from coming out the exhaust on start up. What I found was a T in the PCV line on the passenger's side of the blower that actually allows compressed air to go into the crankcase through the PCV system. The T has one line that goes to the upper plenum, one that goes to the valvecover, and the third goes below the blower on the back of the engine. I removed the T and replaced it with a piece of vacuum hose that connects the vavlecover to the upper plenum. The line that goes to the rear of the blower is plugged. No more smoke and I haven't noticed anymore oil in the intake.
I got an 03 Harley puffer, and it came with one of the low buck separators like you use on a compressor line, it fills up pretty quick after a couple of hard runs under boost. I got to empty the dang thing all the time. Looking for a better animal. The LFP unit (I think its theirs) has a return back to the valve cover I believe, but it is a monsterous looking thing that ties into the oil fill neck. Anyone got something similar but not connected like that? I got a lathe and Bridgeport, could probably cobble something up, mount on a high bracket and tie back into the motor. Thoughts??
I don't have a puff of smoke on startup (valve seals ? ) I know ford has factored it in...
but any air entering downstream of the MAF is un-metered air. Now the factory setup was designed to work a certain way, when I added a filter inline that screwed it all up. Thats why I think it was going lean, the PCV valve wasn't modulating like it supposed to and was just open sending "extra" air in with no extra fuel to balance. My next mod will be the EGR delete. But I need a programmer.... I do have a good lead on one though. Hopefully by this weekend.
I have a Expedition with a recent L SC setup. I'm a product designer, and thought the system out. Keep in mind that the plenum's a constant vacuum with the blower. If under stong vacuum, oil is sucked thru the tubing to the collector. Then either the collector holds the oil or it has a check valve to return the oil to the engine. If it has a check valve then it has to be so weak that even a small amount of oil can keep it open while not under vac.
Said, if your valve cover return type seperator is suposably working, How would you know? unless you pull your blower? Think, if your valve cover return type seperator has no (seen) check valve, then wouldn't the draining port become a suction port under vacuum????
I personally have a brand name (Speedair) oil seperator (air compressor type) inline with the lower intake drain line (thats what it is) Tee'd with the PCV going into the seperator. It collects a small bit of oil every say 2 weeks. Just enough for me to drain out of it into a rag. I'd figure > an ounce. BUT, no matter how you look at it, it's an ounce not going thru the sysyem killing your gases octane.
As for the user who mentioned the problem with using a filter and geting a code , and a lean fuel condition. That makes no sense!! filter or no filter it would be the same,no extra air being introduced. There must be some other issues their!!!!!!!!!

Originally I capped the compressor drain line, and installed the oil separator.
Lean bank 1 & 2 popped after a few WOT runs. As long as I kept my foot out of it, no codes. So then I capped the plenum, and vented the valve cover to atmosphere. No codes no matter what. This is a stock 04 L with 35K mi.
Now it may not make any sense at all but thats my story......
And I did end up with a Predator, BIG improvement. I think those Ford engineers are too enviormentally sound ( too lean )
i already have oil in it, so im glad its there now.
sorry to hijack this, but does anyone have the cleaning instructions for this particular unit? i lost mine, and with the recent seafoam treatment, it's pretty nasty. thanks.
