four stroke vs four cycle?????
Actually the correct description is the "four-stroke cycle" vs. the "two stroke cycle". The "cycle" being the repeated process of bringing air and fuel into the cylinder, compressing it, igniting it to release the energy, said energy driving the piston downwards, then expelling the exhaust gases prior to repeating the process over and over.
The "four-stroke" cycle is accomplished in 4 strokes of the piston, with a stroke being defined as the movement of the piston from one end of the cylinder to another. Down=Intake
Up=Compression
Down=Power
Up=Exhaust
Repeat.
The 2-stroke engine accomplishes these processes in 2 strokes of the piston.
Down=Power and Intake
Up=Exhaust and compression
with that said who prefers 4 strokes to two strokes??
i have a 99 yamaha 2 stroke. i have been looking at evinrude e-tecs, they seem to be the new standard in 2-stroke technology.
i like the quietness of 4-strokes, they are a little heavier, maintenance wise is it tougher to work on than 2 strokes??

I also have a 60 hp johnson 2 stroke.
So, I tried the 2 hp with a full tank of gas....(1/4 gal) and it kept going and going etc. I figured it pushed my 17' boat 3 miles on one tank of gas, so that means 12 miles per gal.
Quiet and starts on the first pull.
when it comes to anything other that trucks obviously, im for 2smoke all the way.
how can you beet that smell, hell, i add 2stroke oil to the gas of the lawnmower and gocart somtimes when noones looking just cause it smells better.
the only problem i have with 2stroke is how high strung and finicky they are when you start modding them, i leave most stuff stock cause i dont want to blow it up if it gets a little to cold or runs a little hot.

There is one nasty hill that we mow, damn near straight up and down. Thats were the good old lawn boy comes in handy. its about 20 years old, never been torn into or rebuilt. I start her up, tie a rope round the handle bar holding the engine kill lever down. let it roll its self down the hill, pull it up with the rope and send it down again. its managed to flip onto its side a couple times, just lays there and keeps running till i flip her back over. shes only rated at 3.5 horses but it'll tear down the hill through grass about 3 feet tall with out missing a beat.
I've got a old 2stroke homelite bandit weed whacker, it gets fussy ever now and then but a turn on the carb mixture screw straightens it out. I replaced the standard line head with a metal unit that wips around two 5 inch sections of chainsaw chain, it tears through anything.
between 2 and 4 stroke I'll take whatever i can get, I've never bought a mower, i just drag them home on junk day and get em going again.
