Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I believe that I'm going to send back my Volant system without even opening it up. There is an ever-hopeful part of me that wants to install it and try it out, but I keep hearing from lots of experienced FTE'ers in here that the performance curve is nearly flat on this V10, and I won't see the advertised bennies from hardly anything (intake, headers, exhaust, tuners, etc.). I really am wishing I had pushed the point with my wife and gotten the Ex with a 7.3 in it like my truck.
Anyway, jackrista, I read about the acetone here in one of the FTe threads a short while back. The reports are that it works, but that each engine has it's own optimum point of success somewhere between 1 and 2 ounces per 10 gallons of gas. It's pretty cheap stuff (less than $6/gallon at Home Depot).
The single best bang for the buck for performance on a V10 Ex is putting 4.30's behind her. The power band of the V10 is TAILOR made for the rpm range the 4.30's puts you in.
Shifts just around town run thru 1-3 BEFORE you are at 30 when just putting...
Mileage unloaded on the highway (something I do NOT do)...will suffer due to the higher RPM's...
BUT towing (something I DO)...the MPG's should actually go UP due to less frequent downshifts out of OD...YES read your manual...you CAN tow with OD on...just that as pointed out previously...if she is hunting or constantly downshifting...lock out OD and this thing will pull darn near any hill in 3rd with the 4.30's...
Now on the 3.73's...someone earlier asked about 3.73's towing 6000#'s. Well I happen to tow our 7500# TT near 7000 miles last year with the 3.73's. I towed thru all kinds of terrain (Black Hills, Big Horns, Rockies) and all kinds of weather (strong head and cross winds)...the 3.73's with OD OFF will pull STRONG. I ONLY upgraded this past year to 4.30's as I upgraded my TT to a 9000# 34' monster...I wanted a better match...
I like the overall feel and response of the 4.30's over the 3.73's...it is really my opinion that the 3.73's is a BAD match to the V10 power band...but if you have them and are pulling UNDER 7500#'s...I was VERY happy with the towing...just need to work them "properly".
For those interested...here is a post I put together on Open roads Forum after my 4200 mile trip last year with the Ex
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/18127992/gotomsg/18169491.cfm#18169491
As you read it...don't cringe too much on the 5000 RPM's...it is NECESSARY to do in order to be able to maintain speed if you "lose" the momentum on STEEP HIGH GRADES...the 4R100 (our 4 speed tranny)...has a horrible spacing between first and second...the power band has a "plateau" from ~1900-2500...the 3.73's just can't peddle fast enough and you start to slide backwards losing speed...I played extensively on the long steep 8000+ foot mountain passes to hit on this strategy...it does work.
But to answer the OP's question...for me IMO the 4.30 upgrade is the single best bang for the buck on the V10 performance wise. MPG wise...well towing wise...they mpg's will be slightly better...unloaded on the highway...that's something I don't do so I wasn't concerned...but unloaded around town with the 4.30's I have seen 1mpg BETTER with the 4.30's...I think because it shifts so quickly and doesn't "hang" to shift...the overall RPM's are actually lower on a given local trip...but that is just my experience.
Good luck!
joe.
Modifying your driving technique is the easiest...and cheapest. I let the big monster coast as much as possible. I get off the gas as soon as I see a light turn red. Stop and go is the killer here.
Two friends have 5.4 SDs, and their mileage is not much different from mine, so I don't feel too bad. My thinking is that if Ford had a way to get substantially more MPG from these...they would have.

dont send it back put it on and see the difference first if there is none, then sell it off or if bought from a repitable company the should let you return it if you still have all the original pakaging, for a refund, if you tell them that it does not perform up to what it says. i am very interested to know if it will make a good differance or not, one thing is if it can inhale better it needs to exhale better, have you done any exhaust mods yet?? if you sell it let me know.
the lucas octane booster i know works good on long trips in my old car from my house to frisco it increase the milage by 3-4 mpg. have yet to try anything on the X yet. i am going to put in the BG 44K fuel cleaner in first since i do not if if the previous owner has treated the fuel system.
