Running out of things to look for here....I could use some suggestions. 01 Explorer Sport 4.0 DOHC 4x4
The steering wheel was shaking while the brakes were applied..... but only after having driven for 20 minutes or more.
I pulled the front wheels and found that the passenger side front caliper was not floating. I dissassembled both front calipers and replaced and greased the pins. As a result of the seized caliper, the pass. side rotor seemed to be warped as well. I replaced both front rotors.
At present, I have two new rotors and two floating calipers.
Now, again, after 20 minutes of driving.... put the foot on the brake and the wheel starts "wobbling"....the wobble feels consistent with a bent rim, but I am almost certain the rims are OK (Unless they bend themselves after 20 minutes, and straighten themselves out after sitting for 2 hours).
It's not just with the brakes on though.........on the highway at 65MPH..... if I change lanes the wheel will start to wobble, but then it will stop when I straighten out. If I had a bad steering component, wouldn't the wheel be wobbling all-of-the-time? What is changing after 20 minutes?
Anyone have any ideas? I'd pull my hair out, but I'm pretty much bald.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did check to see if anything was loose, but I question whether I am doing this right.
I was jacking up the truck one side at a time and trying to shake the tire top to bottom and side to side...... but it didn't really feel like the wheel bearings were worn.
Would I be able to detect that the tie rod ends or ball joints were giving out the same way?
the jack must be under the A-frame with the tire a couple inches off the ground during the test. you cant have the spring pushing the a-frame and wheel downward. withthe jack under the frame, the tire is just hanging there. put a 2 x 4 under the tire and lift up and down. look at the ball joints. if you have 1/16 inch movement between the knuckle and a-frame then the ball joint is bad. --- now push the tire in and out or side to side. haave buddy look at the tie rods and anchor on the truck frame. if one tire is stationary and the other goes in and out 1/4 inch, you have wear. see what is moving.
