I have a stock1995 F-150 with a 5.0 (83,000 miles) and want some more HP and Torque out of it. I was thinking about putting a healthier cam it her, without having to change the computer or effecting <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>California</st1> </st1:state>smog testing. I noticed Crane Cams has a 190/198 duration @ .416” /432” lift, emission legal cam (summit part# crn-364112) that sounds interesting. So my question is how much cam can I put in her, that the stock computer can handle and still pass the CA sniffer?
That cam is actually quite a bit smaller that what you have now, and it's a flat tappet while you have a roller motor... not what you're looking for. Stock specs for the factory F4TE roller cam are 256/266 duration (advertised not @.050) .422/.445 lift with 1.6 rockers. The Comp Cams 35-349-8 would be an upgrade that will be computer compatible and should not impact emissions. I bet you have a mass air EFI system so you do have a wider selection of cams available to you, but going too radical(like the FMS alphabet cams.. B303) will impact emissions. You could also bolt on a set of 1.7 ratio rockers to get you more lift, it won't produce as much power as a cam, but it'll be better than stock. I don't know what California emissions will allow, but the biggest low rpm torque improvement for the 5.0 is long tube headers with a better flowing single exhaust. That usually means you have to change the whole exhaust system, but there's no reason a cat can't be part of it. The truck in my sig line easily passes Ontario sniffer tests with a complete aftermarket exhaust which includes a cat.
Hey thanks for the reply and giving me the factory cam specs and your recommendations. I see the Comp Cam Xtreem is a lot more expensive than the Crane Cam. What do you think of the Crane CompuCam CRN-444211? Boy the 1.7 lifters are not cheap!!!! Since the cam will help me out more, I’ll go with the cam. I then plan on getting a cat back single 2.5” with a Dynomax Turbo. That should give me enough power to pull my boat with out spending too much money.
Crane offers a 1.7 "cobra" roller rocker for around $199. This is the same rocker made for Ford for use on the '93 Cobra. Very reasonable and the install is very straight forward and you only need to remove the valve covers.
It has a 3.55 LS rear end with the stock 235/75r15 tires. So what do you mean by Mass Air? I know it has a Mass Air Flow sensor but its stock as well. I did install a K&N air filter and modified the air cleaner housing to get more air flow.
