auto or standard

i watched videos of automatics and why does it take so long for them to burn the tires from the time it is tramped down. is that hard on the transmission.
im looking at a 99 250 auto and a 01 250 6 speed, not sure what i should get, auto or manual?

Mine does not take that long. Maybe you are watching videos of stock powered trucks with the very crappy stock single-disc torque converter. I can have both my tires loose and roasting within 2-3 seconds, gradually applying the pedal, not mashing down on it like you said. I left a huge strip leaving dyno days saturday, i was moving and slowed to about 5-10mph and then broke them loose without stopping.
But if i could do it again, i'd have my 6 speed.

go with the 6 speed. you will never have to worry about you transmission slipping or overheating.
Only thing is you will have to shift gears, and personally thats my favorite part. i like it so much I'm thinking about a tranny swap.

I just bought my truck and it is a 6-speed. It's pretty easy to drive. Heck, I have not even stalled it yet, which I expected since i was a bit rusty driving a stick.

I can put it in L and just release the clutch nice and smooth, and the truck moves out nicely without stepping on the accelerator. I don't use L much tho, mostly on hills...

There are some bennies to having a manual over auto, but mostly I think it just comes down to personal preference. A bit easier to break tires lose on a manual because you have more control over what's going on.

I would trade in my auto for a 6 speed in the blink of an eye but I like to shift and spend lots of time offroad in situations where it would benefit me to have more control. If you're truck will spend most of it's life on pavement and sitting in traffic, auto might be right up your alley.

What smokin said, since mine usually is on pavement and my daily driver, I opted for an auto. If I where to do it again, I'd go for the 6 speed.

Go with the 6spd! Better mpg, and it doesn't rob 20% of the power. They are just hard to find though, especially in crew cab body styles.

Ok, maybe not 20% but I do know that those torque converters and all the fluid rob some power. Even when the torque converter is locked, it is still full of fluid and spinning right in the drivetrain line of power. A 6spd still have a center mass with the flywheel and pressure plate, but it is a lighter load than an auto.

I thought the difference between auto and stick was about 3-4 %

All things being equal, no. However in bracket racing, auto will be more consistant than a human can ever be. Breakages can happen with any trans but if you discount that, the auto has the advanatage of being able to shift at the right points consistantly while the stick is not going to be as consistant. In a track situation, you need to shift when you want so the stick would be better.
