My buddy just broke the glass on his heated tow mirror. Can you just buy the glass or do you have to buy the whole mirror? Could he use the glass out of a mirror that doesn't have heat, or is the heat element built into the glass? Thanks, Dale
I broke the glass of a heated mirror on a 2002 *cough*Dodge*cough* and I had it replaced for about Cdn$76 at the local auto glass place, including installation and tax. Dropped it off, went for lunch, came back and it was done.
i bought a heated glass for my wifes durango, heated, it was about $18.. you can buy the glass from ford. the heating element comes glued to the back of it.
Well, here's a little mirror info for you.....courtesy of my own experience!
First off, my mirror/housing was damaged by hitting something (don't ask). A couple days later, I used the remote start, and came out about 10 minutes later to see my mirror in flames! Good thing for snow I guess.
Anyway, I got the whole thing warrantied, and went about replacing it. First, remove the inner black cover (up towards the front of the door on the the inside). Remove all but one nut holding the mirror on (yes...leave one on!). Now, proceed to remove the interior door panel (2 screws i believe). You will also have to disconnect all the switches for power accessories that are connected under the arm rest. Once you have removed the panel, there will be a plug connection on the interior of the door...this is your heated/power mirror cord. Disconnect the plug and fish it back into the door. Now proceed to remove the last mirror nut, and fish the cable up through the door skins. The new mirrors come in two parts, the mirror and chassis, and the cover (can be replaced with them chrome cover things if you want...). Fish the wire down into the door and install one nut loosely to hold the mirror in place. Now.....you need to come up with a "utensil" for getting the cable over to the correct opening in the door so you can hook it back up. A bent coat hangar or a piece of good electrical wire will work well for this. once you have it plugged back in, go ahead and finish the mirror install, and snap the cover in palce (they are finicky, so take your time). Then proceed to put your door back together and your done. I think it took me about 20 minutes to get it done, and I have never done one before.
Yeah you can replace just the glass. I had my mirror pretty well torn off a few weeks back but the telescopeing part and where it mounts to the door were fine. I had the dealership put the new mirror and also the plastic cover with the light back on and these had to be ordered seperatly because you can get just one or the other. Somehow though the tech didn't quit get one of the clips on the plastic cover on right though and it began to seperate. To remove just the heated glass or whats left of it just pull with EVEN pressurer and it'll pop right out. In my case I just popped the tabs in as they had come loose then carefully lined everything back up and with EVEN pressure yet again pushed the mirror back in..piece if cake. It is a heated mirror and cost $199 bucks from the dealer. Probly could have found one cheaper somewhere else but I was happy no other damage was done to my baby!!
