I went out to my buddys to buy his 83' f250 with the 6.9 it has ran fine for the month he has owned it no problems at all, then i went to pull out just about to shift 4th and it started to "choke" kinda like it was out of fuel then it drove another 100 ft and it just died now it just turns over but wont fire? Any ideas?
are you sure there is actually fuel in the tanks or are you just going by the gauges(not very accurate). also if there is fuel is it atleast at a 1/2 a tank. sometimes the pickup tube break off.
i doubt he drained the water seperator he has only had it a month and neither of us know a damn thing about diesel engines, and it could be low on fuel yes we were going by the gauge says between half and quarter we checked at the filter to see if it was gettin fuel and it leaked out pretty fast so idk were is the water seperator and how to drain it? thanks
Water separator is in the corner by the booster if still used..... pull the ring to drain... then use a 3/8 bolt up the drain hose and clamp.
Make sure your getting power to the FSS fuel shut off solenoid....... should hear a click when power applied/removed, on the drivers side of the IP front electrical connector. Is it possible someone had changed the electrical connectors around on the IP ???? I would do a 12v+ jumper to the front elec connector.......then attempt a start....... to stop engine remove jumper.
Rear connector should have power until engine is 112*f only.
Open one of the injector lines, turn it over and see if anything comes out or losen the line coming from the filter to see if anything is being pumped.
I'm getting fuel past the filter to the injection pump. Me and redneck86ford cracked some lines coming out of the injection pump and cranked over the motor and got no fuel coming out. Please tell me I don't need a new injection pump. I'd hate to part this truck out.

Did you try to jump 12v power to the fuel shut off solenoid? As PLC7.3 montioned, there should be a "click" noise when power is applied. If the FSS is faulty, you will get fuel to the IP, but hardly anything will go to the injectors.
And if you use either, use very little, as the glow plugs can preignite the stuff and do bad things to the engine.
If you have access to a good heat gun (1000w or higher), it is a much safer way to help start a diesel engine, turn it on full blast, and point it down the intake. I can cold start my truck at freezing temps without using glowplugs using this method.
If the FSS (fuel shutoff solenoid) is not working, then the injector pump will not build enough pressure to fire the injectors, its like turning a gasser over with no power to the ignition.
Some one please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the FSS connector is the yellow wire on the top if the injector pump on the driver's side.
With the engine off, connect power to the FSS, you should hear a clicking noise. If not, the solenoid is probably bad. If you do hear a clicking noise, try to start the engine with 12v jumped to the FSS. Its possible that weak solenoid will deploy if 12v is going directly to it, and being shared with the GPs, its worth a try.
Jump a wire from the positive battery terminal to the fuel shut off solenoid terminal.
You should hear a small click when you apply power to the terminal and another when the power is removed.
You can also check that you have power there when the key is on.
Okay thanks guys will try to check it out this afternoon if I get time. CAn you hear the click frim the cab? I don't ever remember hearing any clicks except for the glow plugs but now for some reason those have stopped working now too! It never ends.
