Juts to give you guys a little news on the Ford website..... Sometimes it's not the best source of information. When I ordered my F150 the website wouldn't even let me order the truck the way I wanted it to, but I talked to the dealer and he filled me in. He said that the website isn't actually run by Ford, but an outside company, and they don't update things as often as they should. So before everyone starts bashing Ford because the website doesn't allow you to do something, talk to a dealer.
Sorry but I'm too scared to talk to a dealer. I'm quite content to sit here and bash the Ford options from their website. If I find out for certain that Ford won't offer the options I want, then I would actually have to figure out what to do for my next truck. Here in the land of denial I still believe that when it's time to order my next truck I will get exactly what I want.
I was not trying to bash Ford, this just seems to be the way that things are going with all of the makers. More like comparing things the way there were to the way they are now.
I personally was looking specificaly for a 07 F150 XL, with all of the interior amenieties of the king ranch, but without the exterior bling and with the 4.2 litre. Not something that Ford offers, although I wish they would.

Ok, so maybe "bashing" wasn't the right word to use...haha I know my dealer didn't have many nice things to say about the "build your own" part of the website. He said people came it with options the website told them they could get and in real life they couldn't. Go figure!
Just wondering if anyone else has gotten the 6-speed.
Thought I would just see how people like the overall feel of that tranny. If yall could put your rear gearing and miles per gallon if possible. I'm hitting 18 mpg in mine with 3.73's, just wondering if anyone else is getting this or maybe better.
From what the dealership told me the 6-speed in the 08's is the same tranny since at least 03. My 03 F350 does great with it. The only thing I don't like about it is you have to hit a lot higher RPM shifting from 2nd to 3rd to get any power out of it especially when pulling. But overall I still like it over the automatic. It has a good low gear. I put the truck in 4 low and the tranny in low and let it idle down the rows of hay as I was throwing the hay on the trailer.
Still no complaints with mine. The gearing between 2nd and 3rd is a little odd, 3rd is a very short gear. But if you decide to be a stick jockey you gotta learn how to work the tranny.
i got bored wone day and went looking at the new 08's and found my dream truck. 08, reg cab, longbed dually, fx4 package, xlt, hand shaker. it was that silver color. man that was a beautifull truck. so i went and test drove it, and for some reason it felt as if the shift throws had been shortened compared to the 7.3's (2001 model 7.3). did anybody notice this, or am i just delusional.
when i went to shift in the truck the first time through all the gears, i wasnt sure if i was fully engaged. haha. but i like it a lot and who knows in the next couple of years i could be driving what i described.

Ford may not operate the "Build Your Own" web site but they sure are paying for it. It is their responsibility to monitor the site and make sure it is up to date and accurate. I think if they knew that many people use the site to price out their purchases (which they should know) and might go to the Chevy site because they couldn't get a Ford SD with captain's chairs without getting the automatic or some other unwanted option it might be worth their while to rethink their option packages.
What they've essentially done is lost a potential sale on a $50,000+ truck because of a $1,300 transmission. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I've owned manuals for 40 years, on most of my vehicles and all my trucks. Spent a lot of time researching the Torqshift 5 speed. Went with it this time in my F450. At first I missed my manual but after towing for over 1600 miles, it really impressed me. Read my other towing post on 6.4. I really broke it down. Found it gave me all the control I needed and more. There is no way I would trade the 6 speed manual in my Firehawk for an auto though.
It all depends on what your doing, how fast you're trying to get there, if you care about MPG's, how much weight or what kind of load you're hauling. That's the beauty of the manual. Generally speaking if your running around empty or with a light load keeping the truck at or under 2000 rpms helps your mileage. If you've got a load it's probably wise not to drop below 1500 rpms during your shift to keep the power up. Since the gears are not exact steps between each one the shift rpm may vary depending on which gear you are shifting into with a load.
I'm still hoping Ford realizes not offering captians chairs or supplemental heat with the 6 speed is about as dumb as not having the bottom trailer tow mirror being non-adjustable like they had on the 99's. I don't know if I can live without my captains chairs, and for the 20 or 30 days a year that it's cold I'd pay extra money for that supplemental heater.

I was very surprised that Ford didn't want to sell me captains chairs, heated seats, supplemental heater, power rear open window, or heated mirrors. I also noticed I couldn't add the 20" wheels though I would rath get non-ford after market wheels later anyway. I would have spent several thousand more dollars on options if I could. But "upgrading" to an automatic transmission is a total deal breaker for me. Hey ford if you are reading this, how can the heated mirrors option possibly be connected my choice of transmission?
Heated mirrors and heated seats are an option on FX4 and up trim levels. No matter what tanny you have. I've got the heated mirrors on my 08' Lariat 6-speed and had the option when I built the truck to get heated seats. And the power rear window is only avaliable with Lariat and up trims. The options list for the FX4 is very short, not much is avaliable for add-ons.
