The frame is the worst area to look for things, as the places it has problems are covered by the bedsides....mud would pack in and rust would east away at the frame from the outside in.
Also, look for a crack in the frame just behind the cab.
The front fenders will probably be torn or have been torn and repaired in the wheel opening (abut 12-o'clock), pretty common, so don't let that discourage you. Check the rockers, they tend to "pull away" from the inside of the cab, as they'ed get used for a step.
Generally, most of the things you'll find that need repair, won't be noticed until you take it all apart. Just be careful on the test drive, if it's still original, it will have mechanical brakes (i/e not hydraulic) and will take a bit more effort to stop and if not kept adjusted properly, will be a bit harry in a panic stop.
You'll still buy the truck though, the body lines on the 35/36 and 37 are just too nice to pass up
Thanks for the pointing out all this stuff to look for. I was scheduled for yesterday, but the owner didn't want to take the truck out due to the rain. Now scheduled for 9, but it's pretty much a rainy day here again. So, expecting a phone call soon, saying lets reschedule.
This truck is original, with the mechanical brakes. Never driven with those before. Concerned by that too... The owner claims this truck was never driven in the winter. So maybe I'll be lucky on all this.
