I have a 2000 merc mountaineer with the 5.0 and all wheel drive
I only have 66000 miles As i make a turn in either direction while beginingto accelerate I have a vibration that feels like it is coming from the rear axel. I have checked the brakes, and u-joints but cant find anything wrong
you probably have a limited slip back there that has clutches that are chattering. It is telling you that it is either low on fluid, or the fluid just needs to be changed, or both. You can pick up a bottle of friction modifier (conditioner for the clutches) at your local ford parts dept. that you will need to add after you service the fluid in the rear axle.
That should clear up the chatter from the rear end.
hey guys I changed the oil in the rear axel and no luck while I was at it I also changed the trany fluid/filter, transfer case, and engine oil I still get a vibration/rubbing feeling when I turn at low speeds I noticed that if I give it gas quick It will only do it as I strieten out any more thoughts?
still sounds like the limit slip clutch. make sure you add the friction modifier. if you got at FORD you might ahve got 4 oz, and that is minimal. At Auto Zone they ahve a 7 oz bottle, that is about right. takes a couple days to work the good stuff into the clutch plates. you might see a difference shortly. drive slowly around the Wal Mart parking lot and the clutch will spin and pull the fluid into the plates.
Yes make sure you've got the limited diff. additive in there.. and drive it for awhile... sometimes it can take a couple hundred miles for that stuff to work into the clutches.
If it still acts up, looks like your diff is going to have to come apart.
it is only doing it at low speeds If I take a corner at above 10 mph it does not do it or if i realy put the gas down when I start a corner it wont do it I am starting to wonder if a brake caliper might be hanging up a little??
I had a 98' that had the same exact problem I over did the friction stuff and then drove in circles for about 15 mins and the problem went away after about 2 days. I would give it some time and see how it gos
been parked for 1.5 years??? could be rusty caliper. slides or something on the shoes. might not hurt to jack up the tire and rotate slowly, or pull and look inside.
