My brother in law gave me a Champion 10000 pound winch thats mounted on a 2inch reciver mount.has anybody made a 2 inch front reciever.I was going to copy one that a company makes,but these ol truck frames are way differt from this boxed frame chit that there is now days.
I made one for my '74. It was off of a 97-03 F-150. It had the proper bend to it to fit the front end perfectly. I had to cut the ends off, and turned it upside down, but it attached between the framerails, and exits right in the center of the front license plate. After I cut a square hole in the bumper, the reciever barely sticks out. It is actually just flush with the factory bumper. I made a frame with a 2" square tube mount, so I can still run a front plate on the street. It fits pretty good. I have the option of using a hitch to move the trailer around, or sticking the shackle mount in it, or the winch mount.
i also made one for my 78 f-250. my cousin was junking an old truck so i cut off the hitch and then made it to fit the front of mine. i'll get some pics of it once installed on the frame.
One of my old F250s had a homemade hitch up front somebody made to launch a boat. Made out of waterpipe, with the hitch sticking out about 8". After I put a dent in my shin (which I STILL have...) I cut it off with a grinder.
I am about ready to do the same to my truck. One difference though;
I am going to get a 1/4 inch slab of metal, about 6 inches wide and bolt/weld to the frame just behind the front bumper, then put on a Reese bumper mount receiver on to that. Should be plenty strong for a winch or a shackle. Cheap, and quick!! But effective!
if i were you instead of using 1/4 steel. Use 3/8 and it will be alot stronger, the 1/4 probably would be strong enough but with 3/8 you will almost never doubt the 3/8 steel twisting or ripping off.
There's pics in my gallery of the one I have. As far as steel thickness, consider that the frame is only about 1/8", so if you "save" your hitch, it might be at the expense of the frame.
