I have a 96 Bronco 5.0L manual and am wondering about towing with it. Planning to tow a ski boat and all the family fixings. Does anyone know why the stated max trailer weight is 3000lb for the manual vs. 6600 for the automatic? Seems like a large discrepancy.
Automatics are designed so that the torque converter will slip, this allows the trany to tow larger loads. With out a torque conv. a manual receives all the stresses and strains directly. Obviously this is rougher on a clutch than a converter.

I've got an 84, 302 auto, no OD. I tow a 3500 pound fish n ski...tongue weight about 250 lbs. The extra weight at the back raises the front enough to cause the front tires to ride on the outside edge...this results in extreme premature tire wear (price of the spring upgrade is approx = to a pair of good front skins) Also helps with braking (ALOT) if your trailer doesn't have brakes.

thanks for the reply; front end lift is not something i have considered enough probably. I have considered a weight distributing hitch and a double axle trailer. I don't understand what you mean about it helping if the trailer 'does not' have brakes. This seems the opposite of what I can figure - I don't know if I want to have to shut down truck and 3500lb+ trailer w/o surge brakes. Do you have any experience with this?
