Myself as well as most everyone here prefers DP-Tuner. You can buy either a programmer or a chip from them. www.dp-tuner.com
Advantages to having a chip:
- Shift on the fly power settings
- The ability to have a no-start setting for theft protection
- With DP-Tuner you can have up to 16 different settings
Disadvantages to a chip:
- No ability to read trouble codes
- You have to find a place to mount the switch
Advantages to a programmer:
- The ability to read trouble codes
- Can hide it out of the way when not in use
Disadvantages to a programmer:
- Takes several minutes to switch tunes
- Less tunes available to be downloaded
Hope this helps. You really can't go wrong when talking to Jody or Diane at DP-Tuner.
I am not most everyone so I can give you some other options. Firstly hard chips are obsolete on OBD2 computers (all made on or after 1996) The prom in the OBD2 compliant computers are reflashable and the flash tuners allow you to make changes. Very few hard chips are eraseable and usually have to be removed to reprogram.
I love my sniper's special forces, it's a tune that the end user gets a lot of leeway in customizing. I also like superchips for a less intricate tuner, edge also makes a good product.
You cannot use a chip and a programmer at the same time, when I first bought my last truck (97 F250 7.3 powerstroke) I wasn't aware it had a chip. I bought the superchip power programmer, when to install it and it wouldn't accept it, after I dug into the truck, I found it had the chip on it! Took that out, and installed the programmer and I noticed a HUUGE difference, the programmer was by far better! This is for the diesel, not sure how it would apply to a gas engine, but my guess is you can't have both installed. Chips don't change the proper things though, programmers/tuners are the way to go, and you can go back to stock whenever you want.
I LOVE my SCT xCal2. If you plan on major mods later, such as bigger injectors and aftermarket turbo, go with a flash programmer that can be custom programmed. I have Stage II Injectors and am ordering a Stage III Turbo so I'll have my program rewritten to account for these.
The "tuner" of choice for the 7.3 is Dp-tuner, they are FTE sponsors. Get a tuner (ie SCT XcalII) instead of a chip as they are much easier to customize to your truck and driving style.
Depends on what you want, I wanted a bit more performance, keep it safe and not rip anything apart until I am ready to Wife drives the Ex 90% of the time, and we tow the Toyhauler, so I wanted gains with out major issues, I have a Hypertech 3 stage programmer. Have installed and used the Edge for friends, and the Superchips on my broth-in-laws dodge, have to say I like the "removability" of my programmer when it has to go to the dealer, luckily, Silva Ford seems "mod Friendly" so far,,,
If you are ready for all out ripsnortinblacksmokedumpinkickthecrapoutoftheimpor tsfun all kinds of stuff is out there, just depends on how ya use it and what you want.
