which radiator hose?

Does anyone know which radiator hose is supply and which is the return on an 01 Excursion 7.3 diesel? I'm trying to get as much heat as possible for the veggie oil system I have installed. Currently, I'm not getting enough heat from the engine to actually use the system, so will probably use an electic heat source also.

But again, I just need to know which hose I should be using to heat the veggie oil.

Thanks

Not sure but a way to check would be to start it up and check each hose after a couple min to see which one gets hot first. Dont wait too long or the hot coolant will recirculate back up the other side.

I'd say top into radiator, due to the thermostat?

Doesnt the thermostat open to allow in cool coolant? Or maybe it opens to allow the hot coolant out? Hummmmm

Did you buy a system or are you building your own? What are you using for a tank?

Coolant is pumped UP through the engine. The upper hose carries hot coolant from the engine once the thermostat opens. Cooled coolant flows from the bottom hose.

I've been schooled. Ill sit in the corner and study the cooling system for an hour. lol

I guess it makes sense since most motors cool the block first then the heads. (the GM LT1 is the exception as it cools the heads then the block.) Makes sense when i think about it.

veggie oil system

thanks everyone for the info. In response to the one question, I bought the system as a kit from golden fuel systems. FYI, I would not recommend this to anyone else, unless you have a thorough understanding of your Ford and how SVO systems work. The instructions were not very clear, and I had to make a lot of trips to Home Depot for additional/correct parts that should have been included in the kit. In addition, I had to make some mods to the kit itself, like cutting a hole in the extra fuel tank for the fuel gauge sender. The tank they sent acts as the main diesel tank, and the stock tank is used as the veggie oil tank.

I liked the idea, it just wasn't as simple as the system I put on my Mercedes that I got from Greasecar. But the bottom line is that it works. I will have to put on additional heating components for the winters in Chicago.

Don't know off the top of my head. I'll try to measure it tomorrow and send you the dimensions. It fits in the middle of the vehicle, but hangs a little low for my liking.

The tank is about 4 feet long, 1 foot wide and 1 foot tall.
