I own a 88 F-150 with a 5.0L engine with only 5,000 miles on it and a AOD transmission I recently install a 4:10 gear to help pull my RV. The toy hauler weighs 3950 and with my bike and junk in the trailer it weighs 4950. The only error I am geeting on the OBD-1 reader is a Thermactor system failure. I have replaced the relays,EGR valve, the air pump works so does the bypass valve. I need help wondering why I have no power at highway speeds and it pings also. I have changed the timing to 8 degrees and that helped a little on the knocking but still no power. I am wondering about the cats or adding a cold air induction system and pulleys but not until I find what is causing the power problem.
I have a 89 F-150 5.0 and lately it doesn't have as much power after it warms up. I've changed the plugs, wires. air and fuel filters. even bypassed the air pump. and unplugged the EGR valve temporarily to see if that would help. all the people I have talked to say that we are getting cheaper grade gasoline.(watered down you might say) Today I got some octane booster and it seems to help but I need a long term solution.
Hopefully this will help.
Blue, do a compression check on each cylinder. is the motor new or rebuilt?? did a quality shop do the rebuild?? how bout the tranny, is it new/rebuilt also?? or does it have high miles. it could be the clutches in the tranny slipping. are you lacking power only when towing or is it sluggish all the time. any improvement in the exhaust will yield you more power, cats being clogged could also be the culprit. the 302 isn't the best motor to have if you are going to be towing all the time. i'd definately consider headers and a new exhaust to help with the performance. and a k&n filter. but don't bother with the cold air kit, just buy the stock replacement K&N filter.

Pinging, lack of power and Thermactor system failure says that you have a vacuum leak.
This vacuum leak is making the mixture lean and causing the pinging and you do not get any power from a ping.
I would look at your vacuum tank (coffee can) for leaks and then the emission vacuum lines.
If you do not find it there then look at the EGR valve may be stuck open or a hole in the diaphragm of the Brake Booster and other hoses or gaskets.
tozzil, my brother's ranger with 2.9 v6 is same way, he has to run premium or the motor knocks. i try to always buy my gas at the same place. usually a BP or Shell.
Sorry to here your pain, but I went through the same problem. He's your answer, you don't have enough motor. Don't spend alot of money trying to make it work, you'll be disappointed. It's not the weight as much as the amount of wind your pulling. I had a 98 Chevy (then I got smart) with a Vortec 5.7. I added 4.10 gears, headers, superchip, flowmaster, K&N. I have a 18ft Toyhauler, loaded out @ 6000lbs. I had to put 3/4 to full throttle to stay at 60mph. I got about 5 mpg.
I sold it and took a loss on all the stuff I added to make it work. I bought a F350 4x4 Crewcab with a 460 in it. I paid $2500, and it works great.
After removing the 2 cats and installing it with one high flow cat and installing a K&N air filter what a change it made in pulling the trailer she stays a 65MPH without having to constantly down shift just wit until i get the shorty headers installed. The second was 50% stopped up.
My muffler shop used a sawzall and cut at the portion that is connected right at the 1st cat and got a cat with a two inlet and with a one 3' outlet and of course the second cat was removed. It is very legal at least in texas because he also does the state inspections here.
