Since the price of gas is $3.26 in my area, what can I do to get better mileage out of my 390? It has 235/75/15's and 3.00 rear gears in the diff. I only took it out on the highway one time and it turned 2800 rpm at 75. I got about 14 mpg or so. It wasn't bad for a 390. But it got 8 to 10 when I drove it all thru high school.
Is it possible to change the gears in the C-6 trans. or is it impossible?
I'd like to put a overdrive trans in behind the 390.
Also, is my truck worth restoring or not? It's a Explorer.
14 MPG is good for a 390. Overdrive won't get you that much in MPG. If your lucky, you may get an improved 2 or 3 MPG which doesnt' justify the cost of doing an overdrive. Getting a good overdrive system in these trucks can cost up to $2500 or more and you could get a nice small car for that. And it would double your MPG issue. That's where the real savings are, IMO.
That's pretty much it. I drive 224 mile a day round trip (when working) and the 30mpg my Mercedes gets is WAY better after a 4-5 day work work then the little over 24 my F100 gets, let alone the 8.5 my 78 4x4 gets. The lessoned gas bill more then makes up for the extra insurance.
