I have a C-6 in a 72 f-250. i bought the truck several months ago and it was not running when i did. the previous owner claims he was driving home from walmart when the truck quit and that he had not driven it since. i got the motor working but now the transmission is acting really wierd. it has 1st gear no matter were the shifter is placed. i replaced the modulator as it had trans fluid in the line but still the same thing. The previous owner claims he rebuilt it. my next step is to rebuild the transmission again but if anyone could shed light as to what might be wrong i would really apreciate it.
what about the linkage? so youre saying that you start it in first gear... or it wont shift out of first....no reverse, neutral, and park?... or is it a problem with the forward gears?... im unclear of the symptoms...
I'll start the truck with the shifter in the park position but it is in first gear. if it is placed into reverse or any other gear it still remains in first. so the truck only goes forward and there is no upshift into second when it is driven in drive. so basically it wont shift out of first.
Take a look where the shift rod attaches to the selector lever on the bottom of the steering column and follow the rod to the manual control lever on the left side of the transmission. Both locations have bushings, the one on the m/c lever is a snap in. If the bushings are missing, the rod will flop around and won't properly engage the trans. The steering column selector lever bushing (C5TZ-7343-A) is still available from Ford, the m/c lever snap in bushing (C8OZ-7341-A) can be gotten from NAPA
